We often hear people say about those with slow 4o yard dashes that they have better on field.game speed. Is this debate overated or an actual fact?

For instance, I thought Minter would have a better forty time than he did. But when you watch him on tape you see he moves extremly well and hits the hole quickly.

The main point is football is rarely played in a straight line.

If a linebacker is running 40 yards without anyone in his way either something really good has happened or something really bad.

Thats why drills are important too. How fast to they change direction and react.

Game speed has to do with instincts. Especially for a linebacker.

But the problem with the 40 is the game of football requires functional speed, not pure track speed. So functional speed is related to playing the game and responses to another moving object. Jerry Rice's functional speed is probably the very best in the history of football. But if you timed him in the 40, he would be over 4.5

I imagine fans and media make the 40 more than it really is. Scouts look at big picture.

When asked about fast he could run a mile Dick Butkus responded that he had never seen a football field a mile wide. There is always a difference between a guy that plays football and a football player. Minter will be just fine.

He also measured in under 6 feet tall, shows you that this stuff is not all about the measureables, as we all agree what a great LB he is!
