Home improvement/tax deduction question

Are there any rules regarding this? Thinking about doing some remodeling and trying to decide if I should avoid paying cash so I can have receipts from licenced contractors
Not going to be a huge remodel. Probably just a few grand.

Only energy efficient items are tax deductible and those only to a certain extent. Unless, of course you are doing a refi for the improvements.
