I think Obama and the Democrats were counting on the Republicans being more afraid of defense cuts than they were of cuts in the other areas. They decided to play a game of chicken, and now they're upset that the Republicans won't blink.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that's pretty well known. His experience with the last CR debacle has convinced him that he can't lose. We'll see.

This. I recall that they put Medicare (which recipients at least make a contribution toward funding) on the chopping block, but NOT Medicaid (you know, the one that's entirely free to recipients), just to protect their interests, though.

It is still theater for the masses, though...
They both require the cuts, regardless where they come from, all these clowns don't want to go away as the guys that destroy America in 40 years through debt...
But the cuts are not big enough...they need to prioritize the purpose of federal government, draw a line half way down the list, and eliminate programs that aren't in their wheelhouse

So it was a bi-partisan deal, right?
Isn't that what moderates wanted? Bi-partisanship?
Now Obama is screaming that the Republicans are harming children, Republicans are running scared, and all the people that want bi-partisanship report is how mean the Republicans are.
If we can't cut 85 billion out of this budget without ruining society, we are in really bad shape.

I think all of them on both sides of the aisle. Need to carry their asses into work and vote themselves a huge paycut and loss of healthcare and bennies and cut us making their car payments. Obama should have a court hearing or two, on abuse of power, dereliction of duty, aiding and providing comfort to the enemy terrorists, usurping congress on going to war, using drones like it is his personal video game, usurping duties to write and pass a budget (he failed at even when he had majority rule)

This is the new Dem talking point. Chuck Todd explained it all "Yes, it was Obama's idea but it's stupid to infer that it will be his fault if the sequester happens. It's the Republicans fault."
I think they stole this talking point from Hillary's response in the BenGahzi hearings. "What difference does it make."

On Tuesday, Obama appeared at the White House with a group of police officers and firefighters to denounce the sequester as a “meat-cleaver approach” that would jeopardize military readiness and investments in education, energy and readiness. He also said it would cost jobs. But, the president said, the substitute would have to include new revenue through tax reform.
At noon that same day, White House press secretary Jay Carney shifted position and accepted sequester paternity.
“The sequester was something that was discussed,” Carney said. Walking back the earlier statements, he added carefully, “and as has been reported, it was an idea that the White House put forward.”
This was an acknowledgment that the president and Lew had been wrong.
