Buoyed by strong audience and critical response, rather than somewhat lackluster ratings, FX has renewed "The Americans" for a second season. FX announced on Thursday (February 21) that it has picked up a 13-episode second season for "The Americans," a renewal that comes only four episodes into the period drama's first season. Set in 1981, "The Americans" stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as a pair of KBG agents deep undercover in the United States. Noah Emmerich plays the FBI agent who just happens to live across the street. "'The Americans has quickly established itself as a key part FX’s acclaimed drama line-up," blurbs FX President John Landgraf. "Executive Producers Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields and Graham Yost and their collaborators are telling riveting and deeply emotional stories and the performances of Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich and the entire cast are simply outstanding. The show is truly worthy of its widespread critical acclaim and we are confident that its quality will continue to yield a robust and passionate audience." Adds series creator Weisberg, "We’re very grateful to John Landgraf, Nick Grad, Eric Schrier and everyone at FX for their unwavering support of our show. We’re thrilled to be able to continue writing stories for such an incredibly talented cast led by Keri, Matthew and Noah. This has been an amazing experience for me and it couldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of our cast and crew. We appreciate the support of the audience and we believe they have a lot to look forward to the rest of this season." "The Americans" premiered last month with FX's must-watched series debut, with 5.11 million total viewers in Live+7 figures. After a steep decline in its second week and another drop in its third airing, the show's fourth episode had a small rebound. FX notes that the first three episodes have added 44 percent, 58 percent and 63 percent in time-shifted viewing so that "The Americans" has averaged 3.63 million viewers, including 1.87 million in the key 18-49 demographic, on a Live+3 basis for those three episodes. FX will marathon the first five "Americans" episodes on Friday, March 1. The first season finale is set for May 1. I didn't get into this show. Sad I missed it. Gonna probably just wait and watch the whole season together.

I want to catch up but I love watching an entire season of a show in like 2 days. I hate waiting

I will pick it up soon though. I'm only 23 you think this is a show that I will still enjoy even though I didn't live this era or have a ton of knowledge about it?

Im 25 and I like it. If it wasn't for the cars, you wouldn't think it was from the past. it's kinda weird that way. Has a very modern feel to it.

I'm kind of the opposite. I like letting the show digest a little between episodes. I've gotten into a good routine of watching the show on Wednesdays, and catching the replay on Tuesdays to refresh myself the night before the new ep comes on.

I don't know much about the time period either, and I still enjoy it. All you really need to understand is that during this period tensions between The Soviet Union and America were very high. Then you can wikipedia specific events that occur during the show, and learn a little bit more about it.

I was born in '85, so I really don't remember any of this stuff either. I do like the 80's music that they play though

Thanks!

I wanted to watch this but just never remembered to set dvr and just would forget. Y'all have made me want to start it soon. And to know it got renewed is nice. I'm fed up with starting shows and liking them and then they get the ax. Pisses me off so much

Jeez, you guys make it sound like it was the 1780's or something.

For those of us who were there, it seems like yesterday, but today is as far removed from the eighties as the eighties were from the fifties. This is the "Happy Days" of spy dramas

I was born in '83, so right now the storyline is before my time, even if only slightly. But also, it's very likely that the series never reaches a point that I have any real memories of. I don't even really rememeber the 'tear down this wall' speech.

Depressing isn't When I was growing up in the 80's I knew about the 50's and 60's.

I was always fascinated by the Cold War read a lot of Cold War fiction. I miss the CW sometimes, the Olympics just aren't the same since it ended.

ETA: Actually Happy Days was on in the 70's and set in the mid to late 50's, so this is further removed from the time period by a full decade

As I stated on another thread, if this series goes on long enough, I think they'll really delve into flashbacks. There's a lot of backstory to be explored.

I think that was 85, but at least you've heard it or of it at least.

when I said I didn't know much about this time period, I meant that I didn't grow up with it and experience it firsthand. Poor wording on my part.

I do have a general knowledge of what happened during the time though.
