Handgun Hunters - ASSEMBLE (Ballistics Discussion)

Anybody here who handgun hunts care to share with me the brand of ammo they use? I just got a .357 and I was looking at a Federal 140 grain load with a Barnes bullet as well as Barnes Vor-tx round that's also 140 grains. This is for whitetail btw...

Not being much of a hunter, I don't know the answer to this. But a buddy of mine does some handgun hunting and he said he would stick with 158gr or better...take it for what it's worth, which isn't much.

Thx for that intel on the grains of powder. I was concerned that 140 grains is a tad light but I don't see where a Barnes cartridge is loaded with that much powder. I am a bit of a barnes fanboi.

I have not shot a deer with my 357 yet, but I've read that you should use 158 or 180 grain swc or jacketed soft point.
The jacketed soft points in 44 boom flop them. 357 should be similar if you do your part and keep it within range limits.

I'm not a hunter, but I keep one on hand for aggressive moose around Anchorage, Alaska. Folks up here use 180 or 200 grain hard cast rounds in their .357s.
I haven't personally shot anything with one of these rounds, but it's what many people carry.

I picked up some buffalo bore 180 gr heavy mags that I'm ready to try. Haven't shot any yet. I'm looking forward to the fire ball.

180gr buffalo bore heavy .357mag.
The only load to use for deer hunting with a .357 IMO.
Hollow points will work, but they probably won't exit if you hit bones. Have a blood dog on standby.
Eta: .357mag is definitely not an ideal deer caliber. I'd use the hottest shite I could unless I was a crack shot and could hit em in the head all the time

I hunt with a .41 have taken deer with all sorts of factory loads....
1 with .357.. don't even remember what round it was.

Hopefully I can let y'all know how 180gr 10mm buffalo bores do out of the Delta Elite on an axis deer.

I'm also going to try to kill a deer with my .357 next year. I just assumed I'd find the hottest round I could. Like 125 grain pushing around 1900 fps?? Is mass more important than velocity? Thinking it would be around 1000 lbs of energy with this setup and that it would easily kill a deer.

I'm trying to keep it to 30 - 40 yds. I'm not buying an earth shattering 180 grain cartridge. I'm going to try some 140 and 158 and see how it patterns. I picked up a nice Leupold scope to top my 686 with.

I need to pick up as much different ammo and give it a try. Havn't shot my 357 very much, not sure what it prefers.
