wick, those trees are at least 50 years old and cannot go more than 2 days without water in the summer before they die. They need full sun. It would be a miracle to find one naturally dwarfed in the woods, especially in our muddy soil.

I used to tinker around with bonsai. I actually still have a few trees growing in the yard that will be cut eventually.

If you don't know what you're doing, they won't last long. Most of them can't live indoors.

I thought a small tree could be topped and transplanted. I had no idea they would be that old...

A deciduous tree might come back if topped. An evergreen won't. If you want a bonsai, your best bet is nursery stock or an old hedge row (with permission of course). You need to learn pruning and wiring techniques. Keep it in a large pot so you don't have to water it so often.

I had a nearly 100 year old Boxwood die on me last year and I don't know what killed it. The trunk is so nice, I keep the dead tree inside now.

So how do you start. I would love a cypress. Just find a seedling 4" tall. Put in pot. Water daily and trim

Biggest problem I could see is watering regularly if we go somewhere for a week or so.

Eta- any good websites for info?

arent bonsai's just junipers that are wired to grow upright? I have no clue but weve had people buy them at the nursery to make them with.

I've seen cypress, maple, oak, boxwood hedge. I think almost any tree can be used. Looks very interesting but takes years of dedication.

You can do that. I'd wire the trunk in an "S" shape.

Bonsai simply means tree in a pot. It can be any variety as long as it has small foilage. I'd recommend getting a book that teaches the basic styling techniques. For a bald cypress, you can start out planting cypress balls. It will take decades to look as impressive as those pics posted by wick.

If you keep it in a deep pot, it won't look like a traditional bonsai, but at least it will live. Shallow pots can dry out in a day in the summertime. These are outdoor trees and most varieties need full or partial sun.

Azaleas make terrific bonsai and you can easily find an old one growing in someones yard. I'd hack it down to size at least a year prior to digging to ensure it will live. Then gradually, over the course of several years, remove the rootball until it fits in the pot you want.
