Prime, some benchmarks like 3dmark and heaven, and furmark.
If I'm overclocking for a customer, I will do a brief linpack test as well to make sure there are absolutely zero issues.
Other than that, just play some games. Even when Furmark and 3dmark indicated a stable video card overclock, I ran into an issue that indicated my core was too high after playing far cry 3 for a few hours. I was at 1300mhz. 1250 is all good.

At what temperature do you consider it to be an issue and dial it back?

I try not to go over 90 degrees but that's just personal preference.
ETA: I can't remember the last time I got up that high...but if I did I would cut it off,

Depends. I wouldn't want my CPU much hotter than 75. Gpu up to about 85.

cpu=prime95 for about 6 hours. temps less than 62c.
heaven and 3dmark both set on a loop= temps less than 90c.

Running prime95 now for a few hours, max temp 81C, but it's venting very well. Laptop doesn't feel hot to the touch anywhere.

I just ran prime95 for a couple of hours before my pc went to sleep. It topped out at 66, any reason to run it overnight or did I get a pretty good idea of my temps? I haven't overclocked yet so I'm not looking for errors, just temps.

You get your max temps within minutes testing in Prime... There's no reason to run it for hours just to get temps. Running it in length is to check for errors

Good to know. I'm pleased with 66 just air cooling, I never even hit 60 gaming.

That's probably normal for most non OC'd chips.

Seriously though that's awesome. Now that I have my build I am learning more about cooling and messing with little things to get an idea. Right now my gpu tends to max out at about 66 gaming so that will prob be the first thing I try to tinker with.

I don't get into all the stress testing. Nor do I really are about benchmarks. I do my builds according to machine builds in maximum PC. As long as my rig works with the games I play and other things I do, I am happy.

I agree for the most part, but I was curious to see. I compare it to timing the 40 yard dash at the combine. Kind of relevant but not really.

It is, there are other reasons besides gaming. Rendering, folding can all be measured and forecasted performance can be judged on marks obtained.
