I've enjoyed your most recent video(s) as they've been very informative for a noob like myself.

I would be interested in a video discussing some of the different types of optics/sights out there (pros/cons of each and maybe your recommendations) as I'm struggling to pick out a scope for my AR.

Much appreciated. Keep up the good work.

+1

Do you want to build it for close quarters (HD) or long range?

Honestly, I would like the best of both worlds. However, "long range" isn't clear cut in my eyes. What is considered long range? 100 yards? 150 yards? 200 yards?

For example: I know ACOG's are good for close acquisition/close quarters, but would they also be good for up to 50 yards? Up to 100 yards?

Those are the kinds of things I don't have a clue about.

I was shooting 75 yards with the sights that came on it. Its not too bad especially with semi auto. With 10, 25 and 30 round magafugginzines we were destroying our target, but it was mainly line up your sights for the first shot and compensate with the impact as we went. Obviously a scope will make it better.

If you're looking for that 50 yd range + close quarters then id go with a red dot magnifier rather than a scope.

Id consider 150 yards or more to be long range. Obviously that depend on the shooter. A true long range shooter would probably scoff at that though.

So, an ACOG isn't good for at least 50 yards?

I run an EOtech red dot on my AR. I like it because with the 1 MOA dot I can easily hit coke cans at 100 yards all day long and the big circle allows really quick close up shots.

Yeah I think a red dot sight is all you need for under 100. A scope is pretty useless up close and a red dot is meant for that.

My shotgun has something like
My AR has a red dot magnifier

If you want the best of both worlds you could always go this route

A lot of it depends on your budget and what you are wanting. The Marines shoot 500 yards with iron sights, it can be done.

If you are wanting a CQB rifle a red dot like an Eotech of Aimpoint may be what you want. For less than $200 you can get a Vortex Strikefire that has a longer tube than the Eotech and Aimpoint, but costs much less.

If you are wanting something for some longer range shooting there a few options. You could get a magnifier to go with the Eotech/Aimpoint. There's also the Trijicon ACOG's which are 4 power, I think. Or you could get a regular scope if you want to. Redfield makes a quality scope for under $200 that is perfectly fine for the AR platform.

The sorter barrel AR's aren't going to be as accurate at long range as the longer ones, so it depends on your AR and what you want to do with it.

I'll do my best in making a good video if RB agrees to fix this statement.

I don't have a ton of on-hand optics to show, but I can use some of my dad's deer rifles as examples and show my personal AR.

Good video idea! I'll try my best to get at it tomorrow.

I have a Stag Arms 2T which is a 16" barrel.

4 power, meaning 4 times normal magnification, or 4x.

For example, my Redfield on my AR15 is a 4-12x by 40, meaning it can adjust the magnification between 4 times and 12 times and it has a 40mm objective/lens.

I was talked to a guy the other night for hours. He's 23 and been through sniper school. He was saying that there were times that the entire class would have targets 7-800 yards away and about the size of a quarter. That is truly incredible with an ar platform... To me anyways.

I have the 511 model. It's nice that it's a little more compact than the other eotech models which gives more clearance for my backup rear iron sight. But if I were to do it again I'd get the 512 or one of the other models that takes AA batteries. Mine uses N cell camera batteries and they're not as easy to find.
