In the market for one, but I'm really not sure of the general value.

I'm not dead set on the 30-30, but I'd like a round with some versatility.

Get a brand new marlin for $400. Can't beat it for the fundage.

I'm not looking for like-new condition, but I'd prefer the furniture to be in decent condition, little to no rust, etc.

This could really vary alot. Some of these guns could also look good on the outside and have the barrel shot out and you wont be able to hit shite with it.

Yeah. I want something mostly for plinking, but also something I could use deer hunting, although that would be very rare.

JAB528 is probably right about the Marlin though.

There was a pretty good one on Bayou Shooter yesterday for $450 with scope. It was buried a few pages deep in the classifieds.

Sometimes you can find them at gun shows, but these days all anyone is interested in selling is AR's and Glocks.

Good luck finding a store that has one in stock. I went to Hammond Academy 2 weeks ago to pick one up and I was told that they didn't have any in stock, couldn't order me one & the closest store that had any in stock was in North Carolina

I checked around at a few of the stores in BR & Hammond but no one had it. The intrawebz told me that the store in Port Allen had one in stock but I didn't venture across the river to find out

Winchester or Marlin?

Jim's has a few in stock, but I figured they were kinda steep, and most of them were rough.
