| How important is a handshake? (Posted on 2/20/13 at 12:31 pm)
I had a conversation with a buddy about this the other day and we seemed to agree that limp wristed, weak handshakes were for girly men. They just stand out and announce that the dead fish hand guy is a puss. A firm and strong handshake is something I notice and it means that they are a man to me. I have one buddy who just puts his hand in your hand. No squeeze at all, just places it there. I always squeeze the frick out of his hand. Shook hands with a little kid(maybe 18) on campus yesterday and felt his hand crunch when I did. Do yall notice a handshake, and does it affect your initial judgement of that person?

I make it point to always give a firm squeeze when I shake a hand. Sometimes I probably do it too hard, but that is better than giving them the carrott fingers

Yes & yes. A weak handshake makes me instantly suspicious.

I wouldn't say it affects an initial impression unless it is blatantly a weak handshake. The worst is when you go to shake someone's hand and one of you kind of misses, and either you or he ends up shaking half of the other's hand.

my problem with handshakes is I never know which one to expect.. I go up to a dude and go to shake his hand and he comes at me with a fancy hand shake, and then I look like an idiot when I am trying a normal handshake. So the next guy I approach with a fancy handshake and am met with an awkward look and a normal handshake. There needs to be some sort of code as to which handshake is appropriate.

For some subconscious reason, when I get a weak handshake, I squeeze the hell out of the guy's hands. Maybe it is my mind teaching them a lesson. It just signifies a girly man to me, and I want nothing to do with thatquote:
fancy hand shake
are you talking about what the black people do?

A firm handshake is one of the first things they used to impart at Catholic High. It's important. Awkward handshakes are the worst. They stick with me.

This is a fact. There is no arguing it.

This is a sign that you shouldn't be friends with this "man." I agree that an overly strong handshake isn't as bad as a weak handshake, but it is still bad. I get the impression that a man is overcompensating for something or a hardass if he tries to break my hand.

Yes. I was raised to always give solid, firm handshake and make eye contact when introducing myself. Too firm is just as bad as shaking it like a mangina, gives me the impression that said person is probably a douche that's trying too hard.

Anyone who gives me a dead fish handshake gets automatically filed away as a possible child molester in the back of my mind. Is that too judgemental?

I can't stand a guy who doesn't know how to shake hands. Did they grow up without a strong male roll model? As soon as I get the weak grip I assume the guy is a pushover and treat him accordingly.

Medium squeeze. Too weak is weird. Too strong and it looks like you're overcompensating for something.

Agreed. To me this is just as bad as a weak handshake. Both types tell me this is the type of person I don't want to deal with.
