Understandable and I don't need a 15 minute sequence but they basically show this though the hakuna matata sequence which, for me, is lame

And see, I thought the hakuna Matata sequence was a great way to advance the story from young Simba to old Simba.

Like you said, to each his own.

To each their own but I think no Disney score compares to LM in quality and depth

My gripe was mainly that LK shouldn't really be considered "light years" behind any other Disney score. But I actually agree with you that LM is probably the best overall Disney animation movie score. It's very good.

Under the Sea
Part of Your World
Kiss the Girl
Poor Unfortunate Souls

Fantastic songs. I like the LK songs more, but the songs in LM did better assisting the movie, if that makes sense. Part of Your World is pretty deep shite, and it really does a great job of telling the audience exactly who Ariel is.

While I like princess and the frog this thread reminds me of how disappointed I was with it.

"light years" might be hyperbole but I do think LM is head and shoulders over the rest

There was not one mediocre score and all the animation was top notch during this 4 film stretch

Should I even waste my time watching Hercules then? I usually skip movies that I don't think I'd like, and that's definitely one of them.

Here is the list that I plan to watch (that I've not seen before):

Pocahontas
Hunchback
Hercules
Mulan
Tarzan
Emperor's New Groove
Lilo & Stitch

I don't really expect to "love" any of them, but I'm pumped about Hunchback, Tarzan, and Emperor's. I'm meh on Pocahontas and Mulan. I don't think I'll enjoy Hercules or Lilo & Stitch too much.

Also, I've never seen the Black Cauldron, but am willing to let Freaux try to talk me into it.

It's a turd. Do not watch.

Mulan is in the princess and the frog tier. It's solid but don't go in expecting it to be like the 4 discussed here, perhaps I should lighten my expectations as well (hunchback)

No offense, but I'll let others chime in before taking the advice of someone who keeps shitting all over one of my favorite movies of all time (LK).

But I just never was interested in seeing Pocahontas. The story never really interested me that much. We shall see I guess.

I don't PREFER LK, I would never call it a turd and consider it to be an all time great. Just my least favorite of the real classics

I don't remember the movie all that well, but remember it being funny. Patrick Warburton does one of the voices IIRC. His involvement usually means good things.

I mean, James Woods is fantastic in it, but everything else, not really.

I'd don't see why not. It's not an awful film, just awfully executed if that makes sense. If you want to see Disney in an identity crisis, watch Hercules.

This is about the right expectations to have. Although Lilo & Stitch is really funny. It doesn't have the impact of the rest of the Disney films, but it is enjoyable.

Watch them all. At its worst, Disney is still fun, even in older ages.

A Top 5 "Tim Burton" film, along with Big Fish, ES, Frakenweenie and Beetlejuice. (I use that in the Tarantino Creative Direction sense). Burton is at his best in Animation, for the most part, and Black Cauldron was the first of his animated projects.

There's your answer.

This is how I feel about The Little Mermaid. I definitely don't hate it, and think its a great movie, its just an incredibly frustrating one for me as well.

Um...
quote:

I detest the Lion King.

quote:

I don't like the lion king because I'm not a huge fan of celebrity voice acting

Whoopi
JTT
Broderick

Jeremy irons meh

Nathan lane and JEJ

I don't think there is anything extraordinary about the animation, I hate that it's animals, I don't care for the story, I just don't like it, but it is probably the single most popular Disney film.

quote:

And to answer your question

The voice acting is sub par
Simba is stupid, and his arc is kind of perplexing
The musical score is light years behind LM and BB IMO

While the animation is great, so is the animation in a host of other Disney classics

quote:

Lion king is, like you said, forgettable.

quote:

He goes from "I just can't wait to be king" to "frick being king" in a matter of 5 seconds. Now I realize why and how much time has taken place but we never see the transformation and the catalyst is him meeting some jungle bums. Granted I realize this is in conjunction with him believing he was responsible for the criminally negligent homicide of his father

quote:

Understandable and I don't need a 15 minute sequence but they basically show this though the hakuna matata sequence which, for me, is lame

Yeah, definitely "all time great" praise throughout this thread from you.

You actually said Jeremy Irons was meh. Jeremy fricking Irons as Scar.

Hmm..I'm not the biggest Burton fan, but I may give it a shot. One of my good buddies really likes it, so I've thought about watching it since he and I have similar tastes in movies (and similar love for Disney). I'll mull Black Cauldron. But I think I'll definitely check out the other 7.

frick it, Black Cauldron is like 4 bucks on Amazon. I'll get it too.

Extraordinary, I wasn't treated to that holy shite moment visually (BatB ballroom sequence, cave of wonders) just me.

Musical scores can be great and forgettable. I'm trying to articulate why I find it the least of the 4 so it might sound bad

And yes, sadly the voice acting is pretty terrible despite one of the all time great disney performances (Nathan lane)

Animation is great, but visually it doesn't stand out for me like BatB or Aladdin. (or sleeping beauty)

Music is great but it had some really tough acts to follow and while the catalog is deep I'll just defer to your own comments about LM. The track list is a victim of disney's greatness.

I do detest the movie bit that has more to do with my tastes than the quality of the film. Just not my cup of tea. I absolutely loved silver linings playbook but I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to see it again. Just not for me

Yeah. They never met doing the voices, only spoke briefly at a premier party or something. Then were put on Rule of Engagement together.
