Actually, my dark horse in the top ten in Emperor's New Groove. It's funny as hell, and is Disney's perfect buddy comedy. The only better bromance in Disney animation is me and Mowgli.

I like and dislike this film. It's usually overlooked. I do enjoy it. More than a lot of Disney Films.

Yeah I'm not shitting on the music but watching LM last night. The music is perfect and every song hits perfectly. Lion king is, like you said, forgettable.

The voice acting is sub par

I still don't get that. How anyone can hate on Jeremy Irons is beyond my comprehension.

The musical score is light years behind LM and BB IMO

Ditto on my comment above, just replace "Jeremy Irons" with "the musical score."

The music in Lion King was incredible IMO. Circle of Life, Can You Feel the Love Tonight (one of the best Disney songs ever), Hakuna Matata, Be Prepared, etc. And I can't forget a shout out to Timone's hula song.

Poor unfortunate souls
Under the sea
Kiss the girl

But "part of your world" might be the best Disney song ever

Best music LM
Best animation Sleeping Beauty
Best visuals: B&B
Best all around: B&B

I kind of find it hard to say that Simba is stupid. That happened when he was like 6 (or the lion's equivalent), so I could see why he'd continue to believe it well into his adulthood.

I like the music in the lion king, but Disney has such a great catalog.

He goes from "I just can't wait to be king" to "frick being king" in a matter of 5 seconds. Now I realize why and how much time has taken place but we never see the transformation and the catalyst is him meeting some jungle bums. Granted I realize this is in conjunction with him believing he was responsible for the criminally negligent homicide of his father

I checked out after Pocahontas. Recently watched Milan and didn't findit to be the same caliber as the 4 in my OP. will give hunchback a view

I checked out after Lion King. I don't even think it was because I was a teenager either, because I still liked animated things. I remember not really having any interest to see Pocahontas at the time. Then the next one was Hunchback, and it didn't really interest me either. Then I think I just kinda lost interest. And that was also around the same time Toy Story came out, so maybe I was more focused on the animation and what it looked like, s Pixar started to interest me more. Who knows. I'm looking forward to going back and watching Pocahontas (meh), Hunchback (especially after seeing so many good things in this thread), Hercules (though I expect to not like this one really), Mulan (meh), Tarzan, Emperor's, and Lilo (meh).

I don't think he kept believing it per se, but once he ran away, he realized he couldn't go back because A) he was going to be blamed for his father's death and B) well, running away like a coward. He wasn't that person, er, lion, anymore. Even if it wasn't true, he did rightfully believe Scar had pinned the death on him.

I do think Little Mermaid has the best songs (the Sebastian chase sequence? Tres bon!), but I'll take Lion King's symphonic score.

Hercules has James Woods as an outstanding villain. The rest is pretty bad. There's a reason it's viewed as the end of the Disney Renaissance.

I'm not arguing that LM's score isn't awesome, or even that LK is better. But it's certainly not "light years" behind LM though. And even if LM has a better overall musical score than LK, I believe that Can You Feel the Love Tonight is a better song than anything in LM.

I love both soundtracks/scores. Same with B&tB.

Yeah, I can see why he no longer wants to be king. He was a kid at the time living kiddish fantasies for being king. Then his father is killed and he finds himself responsible. He has to grow up immediately and is on his own. His motives and actions are understandable.

Understandable and I don't need a 15 minute sequence but they basically show this though the hakuna matata sequence which, for me, is lame

To each their own but I think no Disney score compares to LM in quality and depth

Exactly. And he truly believes he killed his father until Scar makes his confession at the very end. He stayed away not just for his own good, but for (what he thought was) everyone else's as well.

And I just want to say that this thread is fantastic.

Truth. And this story was ripe for a great Disney adaptation.

Execution was terrible though.

I don't think it was terrible, but it certainly pails in comparison to basically all of Disney's other films that decade. It's sort of a pre-Dreamworks film and is somewhat a prototype for it. If they were going to do a ridiculous version of history/mythology, they should have just gone all out and done what "The Emperor's New Groove" did.
