I did some reading last night on the little Mermaid's production. Fascinating stuff. Apparently they did a story board making changes to the original tale, then they found the treatment done in the 30s by Disney and it was pretty much identical to the one they had just done.

Both Beauty and the Beast and tLM were in the early stages of productions in the 1930s.

TA: I watched LM last night, it is incredible, and there is a little more to Ariel than you had said (definitely a spoiled brat), but yes Belle is still the best one.

And holy shite triton was getting busy. He has like 8 daughters that look nothing alike and are all fine. How many baby's mamas do you suppose he has?

And to answer your question

The voice acting is sub par
Simba is stupid, and his arc is kind of perplexing
The musical score is light years behind LM and BB IMO
While the animation is great, so is the animation in a host of other Disney classics

Very solid movie.

But the Commentary also makes it even better.

Well, mostly I think the two listed above (Hunchback and BatB) reach greater heights, have much more substance to them, and (aside from the god damn gargoyles) are basically flawless. I really, really like the Lion King, but Disney has made some other jewels that can compete with it.

Sentimental value for me. First movie I saw with my goddaughter. It was solid though.

Going to agree with this. All of the side characters stand out, but the leads, even Broderick, are underwhelming.

Irons is quite awesome though.

Wonderful musical numbers for the most part, but yes, the score is, lame and forgettable.

What they got right was it resembling a documentary. Very well done on this respect. It had some stunning scenes that were off-balanced with some very mediocre sequences.
