Jarrell Martin must have a crappy team around him in high school. 1-7 in disctrict in 3A eleminated in the first round of the playoffs.

His team won 121-35 in the first round of the class B playoffs. What are you talking about?

Wrong Madison. I never knew there was another one in class B.

During the Trent Johnson time at LSU there was a lot of talk about him not recruiting Louisiana players. It was said that if we would throw a wall around the state like football had done that we could have great teams with the best players from Louisiana.

The problem with TJ is he let guys he should have gotten and did offer, get away. Cases in point:

Markel Brown
Langston Galloway
Javan Felix
Ricardo Gathers

He did a poor job in the state. He was a complete failure in the state recruiting. The guys he got from LA are as follows - Eddie Ludwig, Matt Derenbecker, John Isaac and Malik Morgan. 2 guys who transferred out of the program, 1 guy who has been a marginal contributor at best and the last guy is just a freshman so he's TBA later on.

quote:

My question is this. Everyone agrees that CJJ's first real recruiting class is great. There is only one player from Louisiana on this list. So is CJJ a failure too because he isn't recruiting in state? What equivalent Louisiana players has he let get away?

There is only 1 player worth getting from LA this year in Jarrell Martin, while some will say Damian Jones...Johnny Jones did not offer him. Instead choosing to go after Odo for the immediate imact at C and then signing what he sees as a player better suited for his system in Malone down the line. Bridgewater MAY be a late addition only because Johnny Jones loses JOB III. I think that's the only reason we go after Bridgewater. There isn't a ton of upside with Bridgewater being that he's only 6'5-6'6, but at least he's got a good build and is athletic.

quote:

Oh and I know Trent's problem was that he didn't hardly recruit anyone from anywhere. So the only point of this is to point out how stupid those people were who said we should mainly recruit from Louisiana. My comment at the time was that I had never met a coach who would turn down a good player just because of where he lived.

Kentucky supposedly has the number one recruits again. Only one of them is from Kentucky. Are the folks in Kentucky angry that he is ignoring the home town boys?

Nobody was saying locking down 3-4 LA players every class would bring us up to the top. People were just angry, as I first stated in my post, that Trent Johnson was routinely letting good players go like Gathers, Felix, Brown and Galloway. Maybe Damian Jones turns out to be a good player at Vanderbilt, difference there is Johnny Jones has 2 other top 75 recruits outside of the to LA kid he secured. Trent Johnson never came close to that. He sometimes had 1 guy to get excited about then after that.

no

trent just wasn't getting the players in (give him credit for JOB, hickey was a late signee the staff had to scramble to get)

i compare his style of play to watching paint dry after it has already dried. i like trent but am glad we are where we are and where we appear to be headed.

never pay attention to rankings like this but it certainly looks great.

You can't justify anything using Kentucky as your example. Kentucky recruits nationwide. LSU is trying to build a program so its imperative that we dominate Louisiana and pick up what ever we can from outside the state.

Well apparently this is news to you but it isn't just Kentucky, CJJ is recruiting nationally and internationally which I think is a good thing. The point I was trying to make is that there just aren't enough quality players in Louisiana year in and year out to build a championship team. Oh sure there will be great years for Louisiana players every three or four years but not consistently.

Football and Basketball recruiting are very different. In football the big traditional schools dominate and get most of the good recruits. In basketball there are many more schools who have a shot at the talent and it is much more spread out.

If you click on the top ten teams on that list and see where their players are coming from, I doubt you will see any of them with the majority of their top players coming from their home state.

And by the way Kentucky did used to get most of their players from home. All of this has changed just in the last 15 or so years.

Kentucky needs to recruit instate letting hickey go and a number of other NBA players. (Kenneth Faried, shelvin Mack etc) I live in Lexington and they don't need to let Mr Kentucky basketball go every year for one and dones. LSU doesn't need to get every LA recruit but the 5 stars and they need to rely on getting a decent player in a position they need. But they can go any way on recruiting. Start early going out of state and it could help in the long run. But future looking bright!

What a beast recruiting class. How I hope JOB is smart and returns another year. He's been so dominant lately, and with the draft pool being weak, I won't put it past him leaving, but if he returns we're going to be really really good next year.

It's like Hamilton this year. Can you imagine if this team still had Hamilton? We'd easily be one of the better teams in the conference. I know the conference isn't good, but he would have been a big help.

Next year is going to be a lot of fun regardless, but more fun with JOB.

Great point. Keeping the top in-state talent at LSU is a top priority right now. It definitely increases the excitement around the basketball program. I think this class will help so much with attendance next season.

Hamilton would staying would have been nice but he was gone before Trent left I believe. Having Godfrey eligible to play this year would have been the difference that was more possible.

I agree with most of your points. If Louisiana has some good players you certainly don't overlook them. Not so sure about Kentucky and Hickey though. Would they have won the national title with a freshman Hickey at point? Undersized on defense, shoots less than 40% from the field and 50% from the foul line.

He has been a great find and player for LSU but I don't think he was Kentucky caliber last year.

Teague was not as prolific as they thought and hickey would not have left which would help for this year because harrow sucks. Hickey made Teague look stupid I'm the sec tourney and he was Mr. Kentucky basketball he deserves a offer from UK but I think LSU needs their choice in Louisiana players.
