LSU Pitching Box Score:

Pitcher IP H R ER BB SO
Glenn 5 3 1 0 2 5
Devall 1.1 0 0 0 0 1
Fury 0.2 0 0 0 0 0

Cotton 1.1 1 0 0 0 3

Play of the Game: Mason Katz went the other way on a 3-2 pitch to drive home Raph Rhymes with an RBI double to break a 1-1 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th innings. It was the first extra base hit on the young season for Katz.

Pitching:

Winning Pitcher: Hunter Devall
Save: Chris Cotton

Cody Glenn: Wow he looked sharp tonight. I don't want to get too over excited after one start, but he looked great. The opponent isn't relevant. His stuff looked great. He showed the ability to pound his fastball in on hitters and had the ability to get a lot of swings and misses with this pitch. He seemed to be going inside a lot more on the left handed hitters. I would have liked to have seen some more inside fastballs to right handers, but being able to pitch inside consistenly shows a lot. He showed the ability to consistenly get his breaking ball over for strikes when he was behind, ahead, or even in the count. If he can develop his changeup in his next few starts and continues to consistently throw strikes the way he did tonight, I would look for him to seriously contend for Sunday starts later down the stretch in the SEC.

Cotton: Solid as always. He looks like he is really settling into the closer role. Not everyone has the makeup to be a closer and not everyone has the makeup to be a starter. He has proven early in the season he can close as he is 2/2 in the save department. I wouldn't change that to put him in an unfamiliar starting role.

The pitching staff is showing why LSU is widely considered Omaha bound this season as there is plenty of depth on this staff, even with a couple of early season injuries.

Hitting:
Jacoby Jones: Very nice swing on the homerun tonight. This dude is going to break out. I would look for him to move up to the 4 hole at some point this season. It wouldn't surprise me if Rhymes got bumped up to the 2 hole with his ability to handle the bat and Jones took his spot in the 4 hole. He is going to produce a lot of runs this season.

Very nice to see Katz battle in the sixth inning and knock an outside fastball over the right fielder's head. That is exactly what the veterans are supposed to. Break through in a critical moment late in the game. This at-bat will be forgotten or overlooked by many as LSU went on to win by 7, but this was the turning point in this game.

Sciambra reached base 3 more times and scored a run. I think he is really going to thrive in the leadoff role, and for the first time in what seems like forever, LSU has a legit leadoff man.

Overall, glad to see LSU get a W. The starting pitching continues to DOMINATE for LSU as starting pitching has now allowed a total of 1 earned run in 22 innings this season to go along with 23 strikeouts and only 5 walks.

I know all runs count in every inning but it is a little discerning all our goose egg innings we've put up so far in the first 4 games

Great to hear. IMO we're a good Sunday starter away from Omaha

The more I've thought about it, the more I think he will be our guy to close down the stretch, he does a great job of coming in and shutting teams down for an inning or two. Certainly wouldn't mind seeing him in that spot

Always good to see my boy do well.

As for the lineup changes tonight (Laird in CF, Sciambra in LF) any possibility this becomes permanent? Laird has some wheels so I could certainly see him taking that CF role full time

yeah because our hitting the past 2 years leaves no reason for concern

This team is leaps and bounds more talented than those of the past 2 seasons.

Honestly, I think that is going to boil down to who produces more Edward/Moore in the DH role or McMullen in RF. If Edward and Moore are producing they need to be in the DH spot so that Rhymes can play LF which would have Laird back in RF and Sciambra back in CF.

If McMullen produces and forces PM to leave him in the lineup, he will play RF and I think you could see Laird in CF and Sciambra in LF. I think this is by far and away our best defensive outfield.

Occasionally you could see Edward in RF I guess and Rhymes DH, but that becomes a defensive liability compared to the other OF combos.

I meant moreso because its only been 4 games, and its been cold weather. The hitting should heat up in March

leaps and bounds? pump the brakes a little bit...let's not forget we won the SEC last year with the 7th ranked team in the league hitting. so if we can just slightly improve that I'll be happy. But regardless I don't think we're leaps and bounds better

As for Laird, unless he gets it together, I believe he'll lose his spot to McMullen or Stevenson and everything else will stay the same. Maybe the outfielders will rotate, but I don't see any personel changes other than Laird getting benched. Not sure why PM keeps bunting him either...

Rhymes will always be Mainieri's first choice in LF this year. He wants to give him a position for the draft.

No it isn't. It is early and the weather has not been conducive to huge offensive outbursts. You might not like to hear this, as you might think it is an excuse, but it is what it is.

The lineup is very solid. We have a legit leadoff man in Sciambra. We have a very good natural, but young, three hole hitter in Bregman. I would look for Laird to move down in the lineup, Rhymes in the 2 hole can handle the bat better than anyone in the SEC. Sciambra followed by Rhymes, Bregman, Katz, and Jones would be fantastic. Jones looks poised to really break out this year. If Laird moved down in the lineup that would also add the speed dimension to the bottom of the lineup.

Correct, which is why I think you will see Rhymes, Sciambra, and Laird most of the time.

Yeah, Laird in the 9 hole could be legit. Then Mainieri can use him for that drag bunt as a second leadoff hitter.
I think he's had to bunt way too much so far, that should be an occasional thing, not a 40% of the time thing.

I like that 1-5 a lot better. Very curious to see Sciambra develop over the year. last season at .250 the jury was still out but he was also a freshman....would love to see him hover around .325 all year

Said it in the game thread - Glenn needs to be 3rd weekend starter and get his first weekend start next sunday against Nicholls State.

Mainieri looks right in saying he is the most improved pitcher this offseason. I was really pulling for Glenn this offseason too to become that third starter.

Which still makes no sense to me, but, Mainieri sometimes, gunna Mainieri.

Laird is probably our strongest glove, but our weakest bat right now (take it all with a grain of salt since we are only four games in).

Would really like to see a order like this just for one game:

Sciambra
Rhymes
Bregman
Katz
Jones
Ross
Moore
Laird
Ibarra

or if you want to keep Rhymes in the 4 hole, just swap Ibarra and Laird.

Sciambra
Ibarra
Bregman
Rhymes
Katz
Jones
Ross
Moore
Laird

Looking over what I just typed, I actually like the second one better because the lineup's potency is really spread out with Jones and Ross as your 6 and 7. The first seems fairly top heavy.

Again, this doesn't mean much, because we are only 4 games in.
