Is it possible that the DC position for the Saints is not that desirable ..

At the moment, because of the current roster and our salary cap situation? Do you think this may have effected the thinking of any possible candidates?

I just don't think there was an overabundance of candidates out there to get really excited about . It' not we need a DC to build the best D in the league . Just field a somewhat respectable group.

I agree the field may have been weak, but we don't know what happened behind the scenes. It just occurred to me with the new cuts and the cuts in the waiting that this is going to be a really tough job for rob Ryan. That being said, I'm not unhappy about the Ryan hire.

You could have a point.

Never thought about that. Very solid point.

Eehh i dont think so, if you want to be a DC for a good team you usually gonna have little cap space.

There wasn't really a huge crop to pick from, but I think what Sean did was calculated, and he had Ryan in mind. Of course this doesn't make a lot of fans happy, but I think we forget to consider that Payton wants that type of defense (with a more 3-4 twist), and his problems with GW were more about his unprofessionalism than scheme.

Yes, I think it is much cheaper to switch to a 3-4 , with our roster, than to try and completely overhaul the worst 4-3 defense ever.

Its a smart move. Its still a very tough challenge for an incoming DC. I commend Rob Ryan for accepting the challenge.

I mean Rob Ryan has had his fair share of unprofessional moments. GW may have been worse, but I feel like Rob Ryan has a very similar attitude to GW.

May very well have been the point in hiring him.

I wasn't really referring to his loudmouth or brashness, but rather some of the shite he did that violated CSP trust, like texting draft picks to reporters. And what do you know, he rolled on the team and his players. Ryan may yell on the sidelines and make a scene, but he hasn't done any shite like that.

I don't think a coach or potential coach would turn down an opportunity for a promotion simply because of the lack of talent on a roster. There are tons of coaches in the NFL and only a few coordinator positions open up every year. Turning down a pretty rare opportunity would be silly. It's not out of the realm of possibility that someone may turn down a job due to talent, but I just don't see it.

This is the argument that originally occupied my mind, but we did just fire a DC after one year. That can't help either.

I'd imagine it's pretty attractive. A bad defense, you keep your job
An average defense and you're a fricking god

Just don't have the worst defense ever

I think the Saints got who they wanted, just not who we wanted.

Don't underestimate the ego's of coaches. They all think they are the coach to turn things around. Hell, Sean Payton took on the Saints job with practically no talent and no city. So a bare cupboard is truly not a deterrent, but may in fact be an enticement.

Hard to imagine that not at least being in the back of the minds of the Tennessee players.

Is roger godell the most popular man in NOLA?

Who would not want the job of taking over the 32nd ranked (last) def in the league? They can't make the def any worse. Lots of preasure there.
Who wouldn't want to coach a team that can go to the playoffs any year?
I think that it would be one of the most plum jobs to grab in all of the NFL.
I suppose you could say the def coach positions in KC, Zona, or Oak are much more desired.

I trust Coach Payton. If this is the guy he hired, I'm okay with it. I have to imagine he had a plan when he canned Spags.
