i'm looking for a league for kids that are interested in shooting semi-competitive around the baton rouge area. my oldest son and i shoot at hunter's run occasionally and i have my own property where we shoot. he is pretty good for his age and a whole lot better than i was at his age. i'd like to try and offer him the opportunity to step-it-up a notch.
tia
wickowick, you know anything?

4-H has shooting programs.
My brother did it for several years. It's competitive. There are some VERY good shots out there

i saw that on the nssf website. i'm looking for someone with first hand experience. is their coaching, tryouts, divisions, etc?

Yes,minus the tryouts. You do have to qualify for certain events though. I actually went to a few of their practices and shot some events with them (they would enter non-club events for practice sometimes). The kids REALLY enjoyed it and there is some very stiff competition at the state level.
The quality of the program depends on your parish though. If the program is already established than you should definitely look into it. If the program isn't established yet its a little more work, but still very worth it. It gives lots of kids the opportunity to get into shooting. My brother's club had a few kids with very little shooting experience and they learned from the other kids who grew up shooting.
It's really a great program when the parents let the kids have fun. You'll have to help with organizing practices and things like that.

I will certainly be looking into this when Lil Josey gets a few more years on him.

did your brother do this around baton rouge?

4-H shooting sports is a great program that I work very closely with. To be a part of it you have to be a 4-H member. What parish are you in and how old is your son?

West Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge have pretty good programs. WBR has more kids interested int he rifle side rather than shotgun, but they do have a shotgun instructor who was once a competitor.
Pointe Coupee has a great shotgun program

How young do they start them?

don't worry about that! he has an 1100 20 ga, 26" barrel that has a youth sized stock that fits him great. at least it does this month! buggers growing like a weed.

3 more years for Lil Josey.
He will never have to long for any guns living here, that's for sure.
