Never been. Going this year! Any veterans have advice on hotel accommodations? Or bed and breakfast? Whats the parking situation? Is there a place that offers transit to the festival so i dont have to fight a crowd to park?

Anywhere i have to eat while in Memphis? First time im going to the city...

central bbq and bbq shop are the 2 best bbq joints in the city imo.

If you're looking to spend money on a hotel, you've got the peabody, the madison, and the westin all within walking distance. the hampton inn on beale street is also a good option - a great location.

Go hit up some of the spots on south main for good affordable grub - spindini, arcade, pearl's. Central BBQ just opened up a place in the south main area. Central and BBQ Shop are the two best BBQ spots in memphis.

I would assume WSP is playing BSMF Sunday night because they're playing in Nashville Saturday night.

Im no OT baller. I can't afford to stay at the peabody, but i will certainly have a drink in the bar and see the ducks saunter by on afternoon.

the peabody is overrated anyway. The lobby is great...rooms not so great. There is a radison right next door and a Holiday Inn across the street that would be good options if you want to stay in that area.

if they lineup is good, im seriously thinking about going this year. a 3 day pass is as much as a single day pass at jazzfest.

we are debating on staying downtown in the middle of all the action, or finding a b&b 15-20 miles away so we can have something a little more tranquil while we are not enjoying the music. The downside is that someone will have to stay sober to get us back to the b&b.

One of the reason i was asking about parking fees. its worth it if its cheaper than cab fare for the weekend

try earnestine & hazel's on south main. The upstairs
was once a brothel, you can have a tour if you ask the bartender.

been 3-4 times, Hampton Inn for location, park your car and never have to use it while there. I'm guessing already booked tho.

Plenty of sit-in unannounced players at clubs around town during the Festival

Guessing there's a high % of rain days during it historically. Prepare for that accordingly

alright, so everything downtown thats worth a damn is booked (or its outrageouly expensive) so we will probably just pay for parking and stay at a b&b away from the hub. We are looking to go a day early or stay a few days after to enjoy the landscape.

For those of you who like outdoor activities, whats your recommendation in the memphis area?

Peabody overrated, all the chains are there. You can get a room in advance and walk everywhere,no need to drive or get a cab. Can walk. Beale street is better than Bourbon street. I've been many times to both. Beale is cleaner,no frontal male nudity, no gays, no crime IF you stay on the main streets. The food is great everywhere,3 or 4 great Memphis BBQ places. Music is not Jazz, it is 60's covers of Soul, R.& B.,STAX, B.B. King, and Dance music. All inabout 3 blocks, good little park on the East side of Beale. The music festival is on the river at the end of Beale street on the West side. Will be packed with 4 big stages, hard core blues in the middle. There's more to eat than BBQ,too. You'll see. Take money it's not cheap. Lot of live music on the street in the clubs, you can see and hear them a little before going in,if you want. I started going when I left Baton Rouge for Tupelo,Ms. about 90 minutes away. Started taking my son and his friends when he got old enough. Was great.

I went last year. We booked our hotel late so it was kinda take what was available. I think we might have stayed at a Days Inn or something; it was horrid. There was ample parking around Beale St. whether it was in lots or garages, and IIRC we paid less than $20 each day. Um...we went to this SUPER sketchy dive bar one night, I believe it was called The Lamplighter. It was a real craphole -- we loved it. It nearly rained on us Friday night but it held off until the end and we made it out dry.

If you plan on buying booze in Memphis, don't. Bring your own, it'll be a lot cheaper and the liquor stores were already semi-picked over by about noon on Friday and it only got worse as the weekend progressed. Of course last year's festival coincided with Cinco de Mayo which could have contributed. Sorry this is so scattered, it's bedtime.

ETA: to the poster who said no gays, yeah, that's crap
As a straight male I was in the severe minority, though I was not the only one around who preferred women
