I'd only sell local. And when you do, go to the bank with them to get a certified cashier's check.

I would say cash only

Stories about people getting burned buying and selling vehicles on craigslist are very common

Thats what I read alot of also. I wanted to sell my '09 Ram a few weeks ago and instead of trying to deal with a private sale I drove to BR and brought it to Carmax. I didnt get quite as much as I would have selling it privately, but the ease and quickness of the sale made it worth it.

Cash or meet the buyer at their bank and have them get a cashiers check and use their notary to sign the title over.

Cash... A lot of folks get those pens used to identify counterfiet bills but that seems a bit excessive.

This. I sold my truck on CL, and accepted cash. It's pretty stressful, especially with things like test driving, etc. I'm looking to sell my car right now, but will prob sacrifice a few bucks and trade in rather than dealing with buyer.

Also, if you're buying something from a dealer and also selling, you can do the paperwork there and save on taxes. I've done this a few times before. That way you never touch the money, just simply get that amount credited to your current purchase. And you'll get whatever you and the buyer agree on.

Here's my story. A guy from Alexandria wanted to buy my truck in Shreveport. He said his bank would only give him a cashier's check unless they had the title in hand. I told the guy he would have to meet me at my bank in Shreveport and my banker would call the Alexandria bank to ensure it was on the up-and-up. He did and it all worked out.

The likelihood someone is going to commit a litany of felonies for a car is small, but it's best not to chance it. Even my banker said cash was the best way to handle it.

ETA: the guy who bought my truck did all his offering and negotiating via text message. I didn't speak to him once until he showed up at my bank with a $12,000 cashier's check. Weird people out there, folks.

I let the guy who bought my car drive it. He left his current car at my house. Don't know what's stressful about it.
