Reading this thread got me wondering, who was the last rookie to win 20 games?

Henry Rowengartner.

Actually, I agree. They never enforced that rule and picked an odd time to start. It was a head's up play by Evers, who knew the rulebook. It's losing on a technicality.
I recently read The Celebrant, which is a fictional novel about Christy Mathewson, but the baseball elements are unaltered, according to the author.
Apparently three weeks earlier, Evers tried this shite on the Pirates (exact same situation with runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth), but the umpire O'Day did not believe Evers in that game, so he did not call the runner out.
However, this incident led O'Day to keep an eye on Evers and to make sure the runner touched the base. Sure enough, O'Day clearly saw that Merkle made a dead sprint to the clubhouse to avoid being crushed by the fans.
Bill Buckner really doesn't deserve the hate, just like Bartman doesn't either. In the "Buckner" game the shite was hitting the fan before Buckner missed the ball. Even if he makes the play, the game was still tied, the game continues, and NY keeps playing with all the momentum from the rally they made.

Red Sox owner Frazee cared more about his theater his productions at the time.
Also, Ruth continually wanted to hike up his salary every year, and Frazee did not want to pay him that much. He received over double the amount of the recent sale of the great Tris Speaker.
I think the most interesting part is that the Yankees and the Red Sox had a very amicable relationship back then.
Ruth's numbers would have been even more untouchable IMO if the Yankees never moved out of the Polo Grounds. In his three seasons, he hit 54, 59, and 35 home runs. The 1922 season (with 35 homers) was suspension riddled, and he only played 110 games. While Ruth continued to mash in Yankee stadium, I think he could have surpassed 750 homers if they continued to share the Polo Grounds with the Giants.

I actually did not realize that Frazee was so attached to New York until a year or two ago.
Half of my post was simply about guessing that Ruth would have been even better at the Polo Grounds.
But go on, keep being an a-hole.

Dottie Hinson dropping the ball on the play at the plate and the Peaches lost the championship.
That wasn't a screwup, that was deliberate.

Wasn't sure if anyone had done it since Browning.

Bartman isn't close. Not his fault they continued to choke. Plus he's a fan. He paid money to be there. Not the other way around. Most people would probably do the same thing.
Yeah, I always thought that guy got waaaaaay to much blame for that. The cubs completely fell apart after that. Not his fault. A ton of people would have made the same mistake he did.

Most people don't even remember that Rich Gedman had a passed ball the previous batter which allowed the tying run to score. Plus, just like Bartman, it was game 6. Neither play kept the teams from winning game 7.

Looks like the correct call to me.

I thought it was the absolute correct call and I'm glad he went for it. I respected Tom Osborne all the more for it. You either deserve the title or you don't. Play for the win. I think it's the single BEST call in sports, because it shows a philosophy I whole-heartedly endorse. No shortcuts. He didn't try and take the cheap way.
Well said !
