re: Libertarians... I have a question...

We ALL pay taxes for stuff we don't want. The answer is NOT to simply stop having taxes.

That's where we disagree. We certainly do all pay for things we don't want, but I disagree that makes us a better society. In fact, I believe the answer IS to simply stop having taxes. Then no one would be paying for anything they don't want. No more social engineering. No more picking winners and losers.

Sounds wonderful.

Honestly, we should give her 10k & buy her and her 5 kids passports & one way plane tickets to Sweden if she agrees to have citizenship revoked.

Since apparently she's got nothing else going on here

If charity is involved the reason could be significant.

But there are a TON of people like this... Mothers would have to be giving up their children left and right, and there is already an excess of children in foster homes.

Short term it probably would be awful, but long term people would probably quit having so many kids

Why must I pay for nuclear weapons?

We do not make nuclear weapons as a country anymore. So we are paying for dismantling. For a safer society.

quote:

Why must I pay for other people's childrens' education?

We shouldn't. Eliminate dept. of education.

quote:

Why must I pay for roads I may not use?

General infrastructure of the nation = increased goods and services = increased economy. But yes, there are many infrastructure projects that could be reconsidered.

quote:

Why must I pay salaries for politicians I voted against?

I don't believe we should pay for salaries of politicians in general. Basic minimum wage would suffice.

quote:

Why must I pay for health care for people I don't know?

You shouldn't. I pay for my own healthcare, nothing is preventing you from paying for your own except yourself.

Or better yet. How can we count on people to not do this in the first place? Why aren't people held subject to their past misdeeds? She gambled with her life and lost. She assumed her husband would always be there, he wasn't. She assumed not having a high school education would be ok, as long as she had a husband to support her, she was wrong. She assumed that since she has a husband and no education, that having not 1, not 2, not 3, but 5 kids, would be ok, and that she could provide for them. She was wrong. In short, she is stupid. She wagered her future and her kids future on chance. She beat the odds 3 times, but the 4 time caught up to her, and now she is screwed. Would a smart person do this to themselves?
This isn't really about her.

It's about her kids who had nothing to do with their parent's bad decisions.

You keep glossing over the fact that she CHOSE to be where she is.

5 kids.....really? FIVE KIDS? No HS education and 5 kids.

This isn't someone who "truly needs" the help. This is someone who CHOSE to walk on the thin ice and then DEMANDS that I pay to get her out, warm, and dry.

And...HERE we go!

"Do it for the innocent children" is a damnable excuse

Oh, Gawd save us from the good intentions of those that want to act "for the children"

You want to punish these children for the choices made by someone else?

You can't just say "Oh well, bad choices, throw them all out on the street."

I am NO FAN of government taking children away from their parents, but you simply can't ignore what happens to these people who are innocent of wrongdoing.

It's REAL easy to sit at your computer, take a big bite out of your oyster po-boy and type, "Meh, let 'em starve."

It's what family is for.

About 1/4 of my income and my wife's income goes toward adult offspring who are in school, just started working etc...

It's a lot better solution than your tax money.

I don't know if there would be enough room in foster homes to take in and pay for all these kids if the policy was no help from the state.

Are you giving her the check or the kids?

Edit to add: Because I am sure she will continue to make smart choices with this new unearned money.

re: Libertarians... I have a question...

Most of the time "do it for the children" is in response to stupid stuff like banning video games or seeing a boob on tv.

Not when talking about a situation like this.

Your priorities are out of line.

These children's PARENTS punished them.

You're correct. I do not want to see them in the street.

I reject that that is the only answer.

Why do you two keep refusing to answer my question about is Gov has any "rights" BEFORE? Can the Gov tell her not to marry the a-hole? Can the Gov tell her 2 kids is all she can have?

If the answer is no, then Gov has no responsibility after. Sorry

Ah well, there's no discussing it with you if you wish to remain willfully ignorant.

As a teenager, I went to my first jobs on a bicycle that I rode on streets paid for through taxes - that I had never paid.

I would even say that public schools have educated FAR more Americans than private schools have.

You people that want to go back to the 19th century - and worse, just have it too easy. You think you would be just as well of when you most certainly would NOT.

re: Libertarians... I have a question...

I think it could. And as a conservative, i'm not against helping out others. But i am also not for rewarding those who consistently make bad choices. Government programs such as welfare should be considered a loan. In order to receive assistance you must provide proof of work. After 3 months of work, you must provide proof of why you can not afford to live if you still have a job. Welfare should only be there to provide the basics. Water, food (ham sandwiches, not steak) and occasional living assistance.
But staying on the government tit for an infinite number of time is detrimental to the recipient.
1) The recipient doesn't learn consequences to their actions.
2) Recipient's friends, family, children could pick up on this and give them less motivation to work.
3) Increased cost to the providers of the country.

But instead, you get whiny liberals blaming everything other the sun, for your plight except for the person who is responsible. YOU.

Perhaps there would be LESS of this issue if it were not for Gov subsidizing of dumb choices.

re: Libertarians... I have a question...

She is actually going to school and getting her GED, then plans on going to community college for 2 years to be an assistant in the medical field.

So she is getting on track.

But thereis no way she could do that if she wasn't getting government help.

Then YOU give them money, or voluntarily donate to a charity that will provide things for them.

Absolutely correct. Fear keeps people from dropping the "safety net" though.
