Why is Dion Jordan our first round pick in the Mock Drafts?
Posted by Braedan on 2/17/13 at 11:03 am00
Yes, we do need help on the defense. But I thought it was more of the secondary than anywhere else? I could see us picking him if we got a couple of guys in free agency, but other than that, why pick him?

You thought wrong. We need pass rushing specialists on the outsides in the front.
Or an OT

Ryan's syst me flies a lot on CBs in man coverage. Does any Corner on our roster give you any confidence that he can do that?

So You think we should go corner and honestly I just want the defense to get better in ANY KIND OF WAY.

Much Much easier to help a secondary by having a pass rush than by hoping some drafted corner can come in and immediately play. Similarly it's easier to find guys that can get after the passer situationally than a guy that can immediately lock down nfl wide outs.
I agree braeden... Although your secondary is only as good as your pass rush. If you give any QB 4-6 seconds (esp. Manning,Vick, Ryan, Newton...etc) in the pocket he's going to embarrass your secondary. I myself would rather trade down into the first while picking up an early-mid 2nd rd pick. Take Xavier Rhodes (CB, FSU) in the 1st. And OT in 2nd. With doing that, look into FA for Pass rush help (Kruger).

How would you trade down from the 15th pick and STILL pick up an early to mid 2nd rounder? Teams picking in the middle of the 1st aren't going to give you their 2nd rounder to move up a handful of spots, and nobody picking before you is going to give you their 2nd rounder to move BACK.

Aim for someone whose picking in mid 20's willing to trade. I'm not sure who has what picks this yr but hey stranger things have happened. You'd be surprised what people will give up if they think THEIR prospect is about to be taken but then again it may not happen.

Not going to do much if you can never get to the QB. You have to start up front before you can build a secondary. A great dline can make a mediocre secondary look great. A bad dline can make a great secondary look horrible. Just saying.

We don't have an impact pass rusher. When the QB has all day it makes the secondary look worse than it is. Not to mention the scheme absolutely did not match the secondary's strengths.

People keep saying this. We didn't have an impact pass rusher out of the 4-3. We aren't running the 4-3 anymore and now our 2 very good pass rushers that mostly stayed on the sideline will be on the field full time. Maybe I just have more faith in Tez and Junior than everyone else lol. I believe these guys will both be great in the new defense.

PRob was a Gregg Williams pick specifically cuz of the amount of man coverage he had at Fla St. I think he was negatively impacted by going to Spags zone concept more than any other player. I'm not even calling him good in man. I'm just saying he is much better than what we saw last year. In man it is just flat out using your physical athletic skills to stick with a guy. Much less thinking and reading offenses.
Greer I count as a solid NFL corner. The term shutdown corner is going the way of RBs with 300+ carries a year. All in all I don't count CB as a high priority.
Regardless of what the number of sacks were, you all prolly gritted your teeth and cussed as much as I did seeing opposing QBs have way too long to sit in the pocket and survey the field. With some real legitimate pass rush all of the DBs will likely go up in ratings a full grade or more.
Jordan makes sense in that way. Whether Jones, Moore, Mingo, or him- THAT sort of outside speed rusher is a key in the 3-4. We've seen guys like Bruce Irvin, Ryan Kerrigan, Orakpo, Cushing, Clay Matthews, etc all come in and provide that immediately. I have a lot of hope for Juneyah or Tez if they go outside but it is more hope than expectation.

Except for maybe Matthews, all of these guys proved on the field they were legit. Jordan is being hyped because of his height, length, and athletic abiltiy, not for his play on the field. More than any other guy I see in the first round, he is an example of what happens when a season ends. All these mock draft people find someone to hype up. Jordan is that guy this year.

disagree. That would be Ziggy Ansah. Margus Hunt was there for a few weeks but it only took one Sr Bowl week to disprove that.
You are correct to some degree on the potential aspect of Jordan but I don't go near that far. He was a legit "playmaker". Plenty of video around to see that. The judgement of how much and fast that potential hits is the essence of scouting. JPP for the NYG was considered quite a reach in the same exact way at #15 in 2010. 27.5 sacks later the Giants are glad they did. Of course, ya can't breach this topic without talking Jimmy Graham and his one year of playing football and being drafted 3rd Rd. Three years later he was voted the 17th best player in the NFL by his peers. If they would take him I'd be woohoo. If he was there and passed, I'd say they know more than I do (and monitor his progress).

Wasn't Matthews pretty much a backup, situational player at USC? He was mostly known for his special teams play and was drafted purely on potential.

oh, gotcha- in college proved it. Him more than others. That why he was a #26 vs the others higher. Another case where GB (like NYG with JPP) made the right call on the potential.
IMO Bruce Irvin was a bigger reach at #15 than Jordan would be. We had plenty of discussion on him and whether he would be worth the Saints #59 pick before it was Godelled.
