While Tim Tebow is struggling to find an NFL team that is willing to sign him, he is apparently having no problem booking speaking gigs as the Jets’ backup quarterback is scheduled to address a Texas megachurch whose pastor is notorious for extremist statements about Roman Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, gays and lesbians and President Obama.

Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Church Dallas gained national attention during his appearance at the Values Voter Summit where he urged Christians to oppose Mitt Romney’s candidacy for the GOP nomination for president because his Mormon faith makes him a member of a “cult” that is “from the pit of Hell.”

Even though Jeffress said that supporting a Mormon would have “eternal consequences” that “outweigh political ones” and lead to God’s judgment, he ended up backing Romney over Obama, whom Jeffress believes is “paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist.”

Besides Muslims, Jeffress labeled Roman Catholics, Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists as cult followers. He has called Islam an “evil, evil religion” and claimed that Muslims, Mormons and Jews are destined to Hell.

Tebow's not gonna say anything controversial like that. Probably just a standard motivational-type speech.

Why is it that Baptist churches have to be so controversial?

I like Tebow, and support his outspoken Christian style, but this is a mistake. There are 1000s of other Baptist churches he could speak to. He doesn't need this.

Robert Jeffress is a POS fear monger and Tebow is a fool for having anything to do with him.

That's so, but there is a grain of truth to what the OP says. Part of it is there's no heirarchy (well, there is, sort of, but it's unofficial and indirect.) A methodist preacher says something stupid and gets a phone call from his bishop reminding him not to say stupid shite. A Baptist doesn't get that, except from his deacon board, and they vary in how hands-on they are. If a preacher has been at a church long enough, he runs the deacons, not the other way around.

And part of it they don't see it as controversial. They're around like-minded people who agree with what they say. They're genuinely suprised when something like this blows up on them.

This whole line of thinking is so ridiculous. Catholics think the same thing about Baptists, if you really get down to it. So do Muslims.

Why is everyone so sensitive? Religion is an exclusive thing, but it is possible to hold a religious belief about what happens to non-adherents without hating people or having it affect civil society.

Secular people cannot understand this for some reason. Why do they even care what religious people of any religion think about those who reject their religion? Sounds like a lot of insecurity to me.

If it's possible, then why do religions fail to stop it from doing just that?

That, plus the fact that nobody has a trademark on the name "Baptist". So any jackleg can use the label even if they're not affiliated with a major Baptist organization or even with another church.

See Westboro Baptist and an example. They're one parish (to use the Catholic term) and really just a family of sleazy lawyers who try to incite violence so they can file lawsuits.
