I used to stay with the friends, but the selfish a-holes all started making babies.
I have several friends going and we would prefer to rent a house/condo either near the Fairgrounds or Uptown rather than hotel rooms. VRBO.com and HomeAway.com pickings are pretty slim.

I don't have any advice for specific places, but it seems like renting a house or condo is the way to do it.
