Hey, GG, I need some advice. My son and his wife are going out tomorrow night. They want me to baby sit the grand kids. Boy is 6 and girl is 3. What could I do to introduce them to cooking?
I was too busy to teach son how to cook and now he is too busy to teach his kids how. But I've got time now and need something simple that kids could get involved with. No baking.

I think a healthy serving of avocado is 1/8 avocado and one serving per day is just fine. Healthy fat. Eating a whole avocado wouldn"t be so smart but one serving is great. Just like peanut butter. One tablespoon incorporated into a diet in moderation is great. Eating the whole jar not so much.

A roux, of course, Zach!
Why no baking?
With mine, I started with something they like to eat. That gets them interested in experimenting with cooking and trying new things or it worked that way for me. I started with chocolate chip cookies, though, for one and we made the letters of their names on the baking sheets.
We also did French toast because they love that and kids love to whisk. Breakfast foods are easy and fun for them. My Dad taught them waffles and homemade biscuits. They loved making the mess with flowers and making funny shaped biscuits and pancakes. They got pretty creative.
Kids love being able to eat what they make and after that reward, when they make something that maybe isn't a favorite food, they're more inclined to eat or try it because of their own efforts.
I know all of those suggestions are probably contrary to your eating habits, but again, what kinds of foods do the kids like in the savory dept that involves "cold" prep in which they can participate?
Do they like chicken salad? I don't think they will enjoy picking a chicken so much, but maybe...they can cut things at that age, but they can mix.
They could make:
Pizza
Fruit Kabobs and maybe a yogurt sauce
Smoothies
Various types of sandwiches
Some type of omelet
GUACAMOLE
Tacos of various types
Quesadillas
My niece and I recently made butter from whipped cream talked about on the board. She's already done it in a children's cooking class.
They like to measure, mold, stir, whisk, mix, color and decorate.

Why not?

One whole avocado is about 300-350 calories depending on size
If you can incorporate that into your normal daily caloric intake, what's the problem?

Don't see one. I eat one for lunch sometimes.

i wouldn't say don't do it but ~30g of fat is a little too much for me. that's why i usually just go with 1/8 or 1/4 at most.
