Homebrewing - Plans for the Weekend
Posted by Fratastic423 on 2/15/13 at 10:05 am00
What's on the brewing calendar for the weekend guys (and gals, are there any gal brewers who post here?)?
My plan is to brew a Belgian Trippel one of the two days. Probably will depend on if I get a starter going tonight or tomorrow morning. I am looking to make it traditional but slightly different. I have some Saaz hops (which would be on the traditional side for me) but I may use some German Perle or maybe some Vanguard. Going to enter this into the Karbach Pro-Am and then hopefully the NHC competition.

We plan on doing a 10-gallon Rosemary IPA batch, probably Sunday morning. Come by if you want!

the Pro-am is with Southern Star I believe, not karbach, but good luck with it. last year's pro-am winner is about to become a standard offering.

At lunch I'm going to run over and pick up some ingredients to brew at sunup in the morning. I love early morning brews. Going with a light saison in anticipation of warmer weather. ABV should be around 5%.
8 lbs Pils
1 lb Munich
1 lb Wheat Malt
1 oz Hallertauer (60)
.5 oz EK Golding (15)
.5 oz EK golding (flameout)
Wyeast 3711 French Saison yeast
Maybe some coriander, but I'll see how I'm feeling about that in the morning.
Playing with the idea of adding some strawberries in secondary, but again, we'll see how I feel and how it tastes when it comes that time.

Everyone has a Pro-Am.
Just a competition with the opportunity for a Pro to brew an Amateur's beer for the pro am comp at GABF.

So much of a better yeast than the Belgian Saison

I kegged 25 gallons on Saturday. I cannot imagine trying to bottle 12 gallons. 12 oz or 22's?

Hopefully growlers
Kegged our first all-grain beer last night. Will give it a proper taste today....

By a long shot. The Belgian strains are too fickle. You have to baby them way too much. 3711 chomps through those sugars like it's nothing. After doing a few batches with the Dupont strain I tried 3711 and never looked back. 3711 and WLP670 American Famhouse are my two go-to yeasts.

Bring a growler tonight... I kegged a honey brown IPA a few days ago that we're going to try the hop randall out on tonight.

Hell ya!
What is a Honey Brown IPA? Kind of like a Janet's brown?

A brew-gone-slightly-wrong that might actually taste good.

Way to pimp your beer.

It was supposed to be just a honey IPA, but I had to get darker crystal malt that I wanted from Marcellos, and then the efficiency was really low so we added some brown sugar. I haven't tasted it yet but the end result smelled pretty nice.
