American Express Blue Reward Question
Posted on 2/14/13 at 8:51 pm

It seems that I am not getting my 6% on groceries for most of my purchases.
I shop at 3 stores for groceries.
Bet-R
Calandros
Albertsons
I have had my card for roughly 3 months now and my reward balance for these stores is only showing a fraction of what I have spent.
any ideas?

1 of 2 things.
1. It's a screw up on Amex
or
2. Those merchants have not listed their business as a grocery store.

I do 90% of mine at albertsons and it seems to work fine
If you expand the transaction on the Amex website it should give you some details on each one

Call... Amex will be able to explain it... Even if its a mistake. I bet Calandro's is not considered grocery for some dumb reason.

There's a list of stores that the grocery category applies to, they'll tell you if you call. The ones I remember are Whole Foods and Albertsons.

Most likely. I'd say that my grocery store bill is split basically even between those 3. Maybe slightly more toward betr

AMEX customer service is usually very good. They should be able to clear it up for you quickly.

Give AMEX a call. I wasn't getting my 3% back on gas from certain gas stations and customer service let me know that many individually owned gas stations don't fall under the AMEX umbrella.

Does a Walmart Supercenter count as a standalone grocery store? TIA
Does Kroger count? TIA

Previously you could purchase as much as you wanted at stand alone grocery stores and get the 6% cash back bonus. As you may guess, many people were not only purchasing groceries at the grocery store, but they were purchasing gift cards as well. This enabled people to get not only 6% cash back on groceries, but also on the gift cards sold at the grocery stores (gas, food, clothing retailers, and even MasterCard/Visa/Amex gift cards).
Ingenious. Matter of time before the CC company figured it out too.

However from experimenting with the card, I believe neighborhood Walmarts do count for 6% (for the preferred)

I just noticed this little tidbit on the AMEX website. I didnt know it had a $6k limit. I'm sure it was in the the terms and conditions booklet that I didn't read.

It has not always been that way... I believe it just changed recently

So is 6% on groceries and gas but not all gas stations and not all grocery stores and only up to 6k?
Posted on 3/14/13 at 9:41 am to yellowfin
Correct. A good rule of thumb is stand alone gas stations and stand alone grocery stores are good to go
Costco, Sam's, Walmart, and Target not so much

I'll stick with spark that's 2% across the board with no limits
