Early 90s, Steve Spurrier, LSU and LA prospects
Posted by toughcrittercrumb on 2/14/13 at 7:54 pm00
Does anyone remember what exactly happened that Curley Hallman was hired instead of Spurrier? From what I recall, Spurrier really wanted to be the "Head Ball Coach" for LSU.
LSU missed out on a ton of big-time players from in-state. Spurrier would have retained most of the best in-state guys.
A Few names that escaped Louisiana during 1992-1997:
Warrick Dunn
Travis Minor
Royland Seymour
Robert Hammond
Sam Cowart
Ike Hilliard
Sean Jackson
Marshall Faulk
Carlos Jones
Reggie Wayne
Ernie Babineaux
Kordell Stewart
Vance Joseph
Mike Philips

Didn't know that Payton was his RB coach. I thought Faulk was highly regarded as a DB. I think LSU offered him as a DB.

Probably so, but a ton of New Orleans area kids left the state and showed up at Colorado, Miami, FSU, and UF who were the best teams at the time.

Correct. Spurrier was interviewed for the coming season of 1987

I thought it was right before he started at UF. Curley was hired around the same time.

Steve won the Heisman at UF. Had LSU hired him, UF would have hired him away the second he had success here.

By the fall of the 1990, college coaches nationwide were in hot pursuit of Marshall. Powerhouses Nebraska, Miami, Texas A&M, and LSU all recruited him, but only as a defensive back. The only recruiter who talked to Marshall about playing halfback was Curtis Johnson of San Diego State. Marshall was determined to run the ball in college and committed to the Aztecs.

Seems sort of irrelevant
That being said it's an interesting fact so I'm glad you posted it

What happened in the early 90's....
Let see!
We had one of our most successful coaches ever in Charlie Mac but because he couldn't beat Bama the LSU faithful threw him under the bus and forced him out.
The Bo Reiner died in a plane crash before ever coaching a game.
Skip forward a few coaches the we hire a guy named Mike Archer who states in one of his first interviews that in order to make us into perennial winners he will focus his recruiting efforts on Florida and Texas....
Louisiana wasn't seen back then as the way it is looked upon now for athletic talent!

The beauty is that Arnsbarger recommends Archer takes the AD job at Florida and hires who....Spurrier so old Bill screwed us good and is still revered here

Shows u how sharp our AD was Joe (God bless him) Dean. When u turn down Steve for a retard, u must not have a mirror in your house. Sad time in Tiger town for football for several years! Glad SABAN came to Lsu & built the team back.

At the time Archer didn't appear to be a terrible decision. Was DC under Bill A. and our D was pretty damn good. Linebacker U.
Spurrier was definitely an up and coming coach, but had yet to really prove anything. He would have probably jumped ship to Florida as soon as he proved himself here.
We also interviewed Mike Shannahan and Mack Brown.
