Castrol sports medicine and technology labs tested him in Madrid earlier this year.

1. He jumped 17.4 inches with his hands on his hips.
2. He jumped 31 inches in a normal jump.
3. Therefore, he hits a header like that of last night, at more or less 8.63 feet in the air. This is superior to that of the average NBA player.
4. His force at liftoff is five times his body weight, or 5Gs (the same force an astronaut attains at lifoff).

Pretty
Damned
Beastly

watched that show on FSC monday night, cool stuff.

the way he flaps his hands while he sprints is reminiscent of an overweight, un-athletic pre-teen, it's pretty hilarious.

Actually the only NBA position that averages below 31" is Center, the other 4 average above him.

They were referring to where he strikes the ball with his head, and surely take into account his height when stating his jump height being better than the NBA median (afterall, he is only 6´0 to 6´1, correct?).

A 31-inch vertical for a soccer player is ridiculous.

Wonder what Darren Mattock's vertical is.

He´s just shy of 6´1, so I´d say that´s pretty damned beastly.

Besides obvious guys like Spud Webb or Nate Robinson (5'5" and 5'7" with 40+ inch verticals), I can't think of many who have that kind of leaping ability while being "short".

Mattocks is 5'10" and he went somewhere between 36-40" on that leap I showed.

The Athletic Point guards in the NBA, those around 6'1" have close to 40 inch verticals. Just this past draft Damian Lillard 6'3" had a 39.5" vert, Marquis Teague 6'1" had a 40.5" vert.

Ronaldo is definitely athletic, but as far as basketball goes those guys generally all have 30" or better verts.

I'm not discrediting Ronaldo at all here, just saying that the line they keep throwing out there is poppycock.

Ronaldo is athletic as hell but that vertical is not the stat to throw out there to show that. Hell the 100th ranked vertical at the NFL combine last year was 34.5" - LINK

What those metrics do illustrate though is just how damn high some NBA players head's get when they throw down a dunk. Someone 6'9" with a near 40" vert is getting nearly 18 inches higher than Ronaldo in the air on his 8.6 foot high header.

I did however like that part about kicking his legs up to raise his center of gravity... not sure if that works at all but I found it interesting.

Is this the same one that had him running a 60m dash against a Spanish Olympic sprinter? He lost that pretty bad, but he isn't an efficient sprinter. They then did a pole run and CR7 blew the sprinter away. I think it was the same series that had the remarkable performance by Drew Brees and his accuracy throwing a football.

Yea Sport Science or something like that studied him. The experiment they did when they turned the lights off was incredible.
