Thinking about buying one for my 8 year old. Have any of you bought one for your son/daughter and if so were you happy with the rifle? Thanks in advance.

I do not like Savages. Nothing wrong with them but I just dont like them. I recommend a Remington 700 in youth stock and then he can change it out to a full size when necessary. I also do not care for .243 but that will start a shite storm on here. Go with a .280 or 7mm-08.

What kind of recoil do you get from the .280? My son is about 60lbs, would it be sufficient for him and also what grain bullet do you recommend?

I just would rather spend a few more bucks and get something a bit nicer.

Thats understandable. Just looking for something to start him out on then work up to the nicer stuff! I like the Remington models and have heard really good things about Tikka T3 Lite rifles.

I personally have not shot one. My dads hunting buddy shoots a .280 and loves his. My dad has shot it and claims that it is a heavy 30-30 for comparison. My dad got a single shot 7mm-08 for this season and I have not shot it either but he says that it is almost identical to a 30-30.

I cannot recommend what weight bullets to use as I have not papered either of them.

Another great option, LINK.
I shot my first deer with this rifle when I was 8 years old. I have no idea what I weighed but I wanst a fat arse, yet. My dad cut down the stock to fit me perfectly and I glued it back on when I got older.

Not what you want if he is recoil sensitive. Not calling him a girl, but hes 60lbs.

Here is the first one I could fine. I am sure they can be had for much cheaper too. But I believe that this one comes with the full size stock too. 1 gun for many many years. Again, I do not recommend that caliber, its just what popped up.

I have a 50 lb daughter that shoots a 7mm-08. That being said, it has a ported barrel and chopped down stock to fit little ones. A grown man should be able to shoot it one-handed. It's loud as hell though. She'll be able to shoot it for years though. And a 140 grain bullet hurts a deer a lot more than a 90 grain bullet.

He can kill plenty deer with a .243, but with a .280, 30-06, 7mm-08, etc, he can go hunt damn near anything in the U.S. when he grows up. Just my .02

Do not like savages he say!!! Lol just say your a remington guy

This is the only rifle i buy. Love yhe accutrigger and out of the box accuracy! One of the best rifles on the market. The axis is their lower range gun but should be fine for an 8yr old.

I don't have an axis but have had several Savage rifles and loved them. The weather warrior .338 116FHSAK is the perfect gun for this region.

Umm I do not like Savages and said so in my first post. I only own one Remington so I would hardly said that I am a Remington Guy too.

I am a Browning guy. Accuracy and beautiful fit and finish. A legend, if you will. However, not what the OP is looking for.

I recommend spending a little more on a nicer rifle that will last a lifetime. I never have and never will skimp when it comes to spending money on my firearms. They are something I will keep forever. Hopefully your son will keep this rifle forever too.

not getting into a pissing match with you.. Lol, i hve browning rifles, weatherby rifles, and remingtons... And i have nice savages with nice walnut stock topped with leupold scope, and i can guarantee it will shoot just as good or better than the browning and remington. Now its not the rifle in question the axis, but savage has some nice rigles that have GREAT accuracy. I would rather get the $600 savage and put a nice scope on than the $900 browning

Good, you couldnt hang

There is nothing wrong with them, I never did say that there was. I would just rather spend more money on a nicer gun. It is very common knowledge that Savages lack in fit and finish, however, they are good shooters.

The only gun that I have ever sold in my life was a Savage because I did not care for it.

I looked at the savages at christmas for my son who just turned 10. I didn't buy one cause all I could get was a package deal (rifle and scope). The scopes were trash and I didn't want to pay for a scope I would immediatly replace. I wound up getting a ruger american chambered in 308. Like you I was worried about recoil with a heavier load than the 243 but there are some reduced recoil loads that will help in that department but if he can shoot a 20 ga. he can handle the recoil of a 308 or 7mm 08. without the reduced recoil loads.

I gotta disagree with the accuracy argument between Savage and Browning. My dad owns a Savage and I can outshoot my X-Bolt with it every stinking day. Kinda pisses me off considering how much more I paid for that SS Stalker than he has in that Savage. But mine is prettier

I have never stretched mine past 200 yards. I can get a 5 shot grouping within 1.25" at that distance and I can cloverleaf the bulls eye at 100 yards with 5 shots. I hunt in the south and dont need distance, I need early morning and late evening visibility. Thats why I put a Swaro on top.

Savages are accurate guns, no doubt. So are Sakos and Tikkas. I dont own those either.
