My wife is leaving her job because I am taking a position (Ive been in school) and we are moving. It will be three months until my coverage kicks in and we may have to go with COBRA coverage. Does anyone here have any suggestions or history they can share. If it was just her and I I would roll the dice but we have a 6 month old.

Thanks Ill Hang Up and Listen.

Damn, good luck. We just rolled the dice. Can't do that with a newborn. I hear it's expensive as hell.

Call BC/BS and tell them the situation. They can set you up with something cheaper that should start coverage at end of this month. Cheaper than cobra but you may have to roll the dice for two weeks.

I'm covered under COBRA right now. Before she leaves her job, make sure that she gets a paper showing she was covered under there insurance. Forgot the name of said paper, but new insurance companys will be asking for it.

Being ya'll are young, you might look into a high deductable coverage for the short term which will be a lot cheaper. Just make sure all ya'lls heath needs are done before ya'll leave.

It's been a while since I've dealt with it -- so don't quote me on the numbers.

As I recall, once they send you the COBRA notice, you have sixty days to decide. So, you can wait the 60 days, see if anything happened that warrants coverage.

Also, as I recall, your pre-existings must be covered under your new plan so long as you haven't suffered a lapse of more than 63 days in coverage.

So, if nothing happens during the 60 days before you elect coverage, go ahead and pay the first month. Then once your other coverage kicks in, just don't pay any further.

Obviously, if something happens during the 60 days that requires continuing coverage during months 2 and 3, then you should pay the COBRA premiums for those months to make sure those procedures are covered.

This is not legal advice. Go see an ERISA attorney before you do anything.

Just had do deal with COBRA last month. Family cost was $1100. Luckily I found out that I qualified to enroll in my benefits plan due to a life status change qualification as my wife switching jobs and having to wait 3 months for benefits coverage qualified.

Best thing to do is call Humana or Aetna and ask for a high deductible plan. I did this in 2011 for a few months and it ran about $612 for a family of 4 (2 kids)

I got a super cheap policy ($180/month) with a high deductible plan from bcbs. I think it was a 5k deductible--much cheaper than cobra. This was for my wife, me, and an 18 month old kid.

You have 60 days to elect. Correct. Do so on day 59.

You then have 45 days to pay, after you elect. This should get you past the 90 day waiting period at the new employer.

Pay any small claims yourself. But let's say on day 80 you must have insurance, then you have to go back a pay premiums from day 1.

Here's the only problem with your "advice" -- you totally ignore the 63 day preexisting coverage problem he may have with his insurance with the new employer. If, after he's on the policy for 5 months, something EXPENSIVE comes up, the new company could claim that it was a preexisting condition. Pursuant to your advise, he could be arguing with the insurance company for years as his credit goes to sh!t. If he pays just one month, he will not suffer the 63 day lapse in coverage so his new insurance must cover ALL preexistings.
