So I am just starting out in this game. I clearly have a lot of catching up to do. So far I have just been doing the goblin missions vs the computer while I am upgrading my resource gathering. I have a very basic noob question, but can we tell our army where to attack? So far I have just dropped them and they run at the closest thing, and they will be hacking at a building while a cannon in unloading on them.

Giants go for defense first, goblins go for resources, everything else attacks what's in front of them for the most part.

I was able to start upgrades on a mortar, two archer towers, and a cannon before I left for work this am. And I'm in the process of upgrading my barbarian. Plus my shield is active for 15 hours so I won't get attacked while at work.

Heck yeah I did! 
I went ahead and got $20 worth of gems just to get some more builders. Stuff just takes so long and I knew if I had to keep waiting 12-48 hours every time I upgrade something I'd grow tired very quickly with this game. Figured additional builders was the best investment I could make on it

alright, i need a new raiding set up
lvl 5 giants can't last long enough to take out the air support
someone give me a new setup to attack these high level bases

I usually go in with bombers to blast walls, then giants and barbarians/archers. While everyone is occupied with them, I unleash goblins to steal everything. I lose most battles and a ton of trophies the past couple days but I've been loading up on resources. That's my main conern right now so I can upgrade my defense
After that I'll upgrade all my troops. I have all lvl 1 or 2 right now. Barbarian is being upgraded to 3 at the moment. I get my arse kicked A LOT

the bases i have to attack are heavily guarded by air support and xbows

trust me, it makes everything a lot quicker when you get to TH7 and 8

Why not upgrade troops and defenses concurrently? Troop upgrades use elixir and no builders while defense upgrades use gold and require builders.
I agree with maxing out defenses before jumping to the next TH

I think that's what he's saying. Which is what I'm doing.
Only problem is when I attack, I'm not strong enough to 100% most times, so I have to focus on gold or elixir. I pick one or the other depending on what my focus is. Right now it's max defense. After that, I'll work on troops and barracks while acquiring gold to upgrade town hall and walls.

no point in 100%'ing someone unless it's for revenge or you are trying to gain trophies.
go for the loot. who cares about 100%'ing or gaining trophies.
also, look for bases with empty storages but still high loot numbers. that means most the of the loot is in their collectors.
find those and just drop the mininum amoount of troops necessary to get the loot.

yeah, that came across wrong. I don't really try to 100% unless they are much weaker and after troops are deployed and defenses down I'm pretty close to 100. Figure might as well at that point.
I hope upgrading my defense helps out. I'm almost scared to keep any type of reserves in gold or elixer if I don't have an active shield for fear of it getting stolen. I seem to get raided a couple times a day and return to compeltely depleted storage

Just put your TH on the outside and they'll blow it up first, which gives you the shield.
I am also having problems getting the air defenses down when raiding.
