My duck hunting padnuh is looking at getting a 15' welded boat w/ a 20hp longtail on it and we are wondering about the speed of it. Anyone with experience care to chime in?

- 2 people and gear?
- 3 people and gear?

Some of our spots are a little hairy to get in to, but you have a several mile run before it gets sticky. We don't want to spend forever getting there and are wondering if the 20hp will have enough arse to get us there quickly.

what's quickly? If you think you will run 20mph with two guys you are wrong. 3 Guys you will not even get on plane.

Really? Not even get on plane? Damn. I've gotten on plane in a 15' riveted boat with 3 guys and a 10hp longtail. And not even 20mph with 2 guys? With 2 guys and a 25hp outboard, I top out around 30mph, is the longtail that less efficient?

ETA: I trust you if you've done it, I am just a bit disappinted.

all mud motors are terrible not just longtails. I had to put duals on my boat to carry 3/4 guys at a decent speed. Also shorter boat with mudmotor equals terrible with load. Ideal length is around 18 with a load.

Nest question, how much is the 20hp longtail worth?

I think the boat he is looking at is a good deal, and he might just get the boat and sell the go-devil and get an outboard on a jackplate. We could probably push pole/trolling motor/paddle into the really nasty bits.

depends on year and condition. I am assuming its a go devil? If you get 1500 or so you will do good.

Yeah it is a go-devil. Not sure on other details like year, condition, type of engine, etc...

i had a 23hp go-devil on a 15' boat. Not very fast. you only use that when nothing else will work.
