How many schollies possible for 2014?

I follow recruiting pretty closely but I dont know the ends and outs about early enrolees and counting back. I believe we had 8 EE's for 2013, and we could have signed 29 but only signed 27, so how many scholarships does that leave for 2014 or is it too early to know?

This. It depends a lot on the 85 limit. Attrition plays a big part. Currently I think the team is a couple spots over the limit for next year. Need a few more players to transfer.

I was reading somewhere I believe 247 that its not looking good at signing a full class. Like he said unless we endure alot of attrition.

Frank Wilson told a friend of mine at the bash that we would sign a full class maybe even a few over. Going to lose a few juniors and will have the normal attrition and also a few may be early enrollees.

With all Seniors and the possible Juniors, you are looking at right around 16. Would have to process at least 10 if we are going to sign a full class, most likely more.

I'm nearly certain that we could only sign 27 because we could only backcount 2 because the SEC treats LOIs like initial counters for these purposes. So the answer is 25, including Lawson if he accepts the greyshirt, and as pointed out that would take quite a bit of attrition.

My only reservation, and it's extremely small, with backcounting 2 is that I can read the rules like the rest of you and 4 seems like it should be allowed. But the SEC can implement this rule as it chooses as long as it is more restrictive, and the evidence strongly supports that they have restricted it.

First, this is from an article published in Jan 2012 ( SEC Clarifies Rules on Back Counting Recruits):

quote:

“If a player signs, he counts without regard to whether or not he actually enrolls,” SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said in an e-mail Monday. “ ‘Back counting’ is only permitted for mid-year enrollees who are able to be included as an initial counter for the academic year in which they enroll. ‘Back counting’ is an artificial term for this discussion and not accurate as the question is about the signing limit.”

When I saw this for the first time, I didn't think he really answered the question because of his little diatribe on back-counting. Now, with all the other evidence, I believe he did answer the question with the first sentence. The other evidence I speak of includes:

o Reports that Ponamsky and Shea have said we only back counted 2,

o we signed exactly 27

o Miles saying we were thru

o Lawson (we could sign him now with no penalty if 4 were true)

o Rumors of a grey shirt offer to Willis, which is the only thing we could offer after signing day if 2 were true.

It's time we come to grips with how the SEC implements this rule.

there is absolutely no way we took spears and riley at the last minute if it reduced 2014 below the 25 number. we will absolutely find a way to get to 25 minimum.

Taking them didn't reduce it below 25; just prevents it from being greater than 25 if they are willing to do the attrition.

Including the 27 signees and returning roster, we have 83 scholarship players. We have a small senior class, but we have some juniors that will be ready to make the jump to the NFL, and some juniors that will be in their 4th year in the program without making much of an on the field impact.

I see us taking 25.

For starters, Jeremy Hill, La'el Collins, Anthony Johnson are gone

Hilliard and Landry may have decisions to make

with the aggies taking 30*, and UTenn looking to do the same next year, I am sure we will figure out a way to sign who we want

I see neither of these guys leaving.

Also, some attrition will happen with backups after Spring practice ends.

Hilliard has a shot to really increase his stock if he stays and Hill goes.. I don't think he goes.

The Aggies signed their 31 in a manner consistent with us counting back 2. Not sure about UT, but they will be too. We cannot oversign in 2014 because we can't back count any.
