Should SP Be More Directly Involved In the Defense?

I think so and I hope so.
In one of his early interviews after he returned, he essentially said that he'd have to do a better job of checking in on defensive meetings and such to prevent a repeat of what happened with GW. In fact I suspect all HC's will be doing more of this from now on.
But that's different than coaching. Personally I'd like to see SP more involved in defensive coaching and game-planning. Yeah I know, he's an offensive genius and we don't want to take him away from our offense. But the guy's smart and it's not like he doesn't understand defense. He has to game-plan against defenses all the time. I also wonder if he didn't study up on defense on his time off. He see things on the field so quickly and can make adjustments almost immediately. He's also great at holding players accountable which may help motivate the defense a bit more.
Yeah, Ryan will do most of the work, but I can't help thinking that a little of Sean's magic on the defensive side of the ball could help out.

I hope so.
Maybe SP can bring some discipline to the defense...and to Ryan himself.
I want that guy on a short leash.

I can't imagine SP will ever again agree to terms like were given to GW where he had free reign like he did. I'd bet money that there's no way Ryan's going to get that kind of latitude.

After what happened with GW I fully expect Payton to be more involved with defense even if it just to remind everyone of who's in charge

as far as being The Boss, sure, all the more so. The thing about Ryan having limited press exposure is indicative that such is happening too.
As far as Xs & Os I think Payton wants a stand alone D guy that manages his side of the ball and Payton doesn't have to worry about it.

Yep, and I hope that includes Ryan. Not that Ryan's done anything wrong; it's unfair to associate him with GW's shenanigans (did I just use that word? ). It's just time for Wyatt Earp (aka Coach Payton) to lay down the law.
It All Ends Now

Yeah, well, he may have to. He's our best asset on the sideline and in game-planning, and right now our defense clearly has the most needs. Once him and Ryan get things heading in the right direction, then he can let go a little.
