Good call.

Be a good witness if you want to help. By the looks of the video, good witnesses will be hard to come by.

I hate that place.

I've lived in the Nola area most of my life (except when I moved for 5 years after Katrina) and have had no incidents. Neither has any of my friends or family.

For one, I stay out of Bourbon late at night most of the time and especially around mardi gras.

If i'm on Bourbon at 9:00 at night, I won't be sober therefore I would never be carrying. That shite hopefully wouldn't be my business so no sense in even trying to be a hero in that kind of situation.

I would definitely not draw a weapon in that situation unless it were my life on the line. When the cops come rolling up, they are going to most likely see you, and assume you are the bad guy.

A buddy of mine is a trooper and was in the block when the shooting occured. Apparently he was one of the first on the scene seconds after it happened.

These idiots don't care how close the cops are, when they want to shoot, they are going to shoot.

1. The consensus in this thread is correct -- stay away from New Orleans, stay away from crowds full of drunks, and refrain from pulling a weapon in a situation like this. Be a good witness. The same would//should appply to 4th of July Fireworks displays in BR.

2. The reported "consensus" in the "other thread" isn't correct. You can carry legally at a parade. Despite the various posts in that other thread, "at" and "in" have two different meanings.

3. The opinion posted in this thread about NOPD confiscating your weapon has been, and probably still is, factual. And in N.O. you may well go to jail for carrying concealed at a parade (even though it's legal)-- because N.O. is N.O. There's sometimes little difference between the thugs who belong to gangs and the thugs who wear NOPD uniforms.

4. As was posted, concealed does mean concealed. But in a crowd like you see in that video, a bump-frisk (intentional or unintentional) is very likely. At that point "concealed" doesn't mean "undetected."

ETA: Just because something is legal doesn't mean you can do it wth impunity. New Orleans is great place to learn this.

"You may beat the rap," but you won't beat the ride" if you're arrested for concealed carry in a place where the cops think it's illegal.

I doubt I would be in that position to begin with.
Not a big fan of crowds, especially those filled with drunks.

I am not Batman.
I am not the Punisher.
Unless me or my own were at risk, I'd probably try to be a good witness...follow and report.

If I were at bad breath distance to the perp(s), and unless I could shove my barrel into their eye socket, they'd probably just get a few inches of fixed blade goodness in their chest cavity.
Like a sewing machine...

They had Chief Surpas on WWL Friday and he said its illegal to have a weapon within 1000' of a parade.

That being said, he wants his officers to use discretion because 1000' is a long ways and someone can be completely unrelated to the crowds.

I took a class yesterday and my instructor showed me the law and it states you can't carry only if you're in the parade. I don't have to worry about New Orleans parades because I would no go to them. But little parades, I will carry.

As a bystander I'd have gotten away long before the shooting, I like to avoid fighting on Bourbon for exactly this reason.

If I was in the thick of it being a friend of mine or something, I'd like to say I'd get to my knees and cut the homies achilles with my knife of pop the kneecap with a strike with my kubotan. You can't see shite that's happening waste down in a crowd like that.

ETA: I'd probably be hella drunk and just start throwing and the above would never happen.
