I'd get a shepherd.

Ridgebacks are fantastic dogs, but they're bred to hunt lions. Shepherds are bred to be guard dogs.

My fiance has one from a "champion" type blood line.

I suppose it is legit, she dropped $2000 on it when it was a puppy.

I'll get the breeders name and # from her if your looking for super high quality.

put your email up and I'll forward to you.

Didn't know what else to call em at the time. Basically I meant she has Ridgebacks. Some I would imagine are better bloodlines which obviously cost more. All solid breeders practice the rules that govern when dogs can mate (age) etc to make sure they are free of hip issues and such.

But if a puppy's mom and dad were both Grand Champions, it would be tremendously expensive compared to parents who have never been in shows.

Call the breeder, I am not the guy for answers, just tryin to help out a poster who asked for names.

Wooly, I would definately go the GSD route. A buddy of mine rescued a Rhod Ridge and they are not bred for defense. I bought a GSD at the same time and he is awesome. He is still intact and I have not had the heart or time for surgery yet but it's coming. If you want to contact me and work something out I could stud him and let you get pick of litter. Just something ot think about.

Ridgebacks need tons, and I mean TONS of exercise. They will tear up everything you own if they get bored/ not enough exercise. They are known for being escape artists also, buddy had one that would dig out of his yard daily. Built a new fence and burried chain link down 3 ft, of course the dog learned to climb the fence in the corner, 6ft. Fixed the corners so he couldnt get out, damn thing actually ate a hole in the fence.
On the plus side, they are damn good dogs if they get enough exercise.

Good luck.
