Her pro Obama ad was puke worthy.

This show is a symptom of the white trashing of America. Go after the rich Ivy League school girls. Put them in womyn studies programs. Fat arse white trash tatted up ugly American bitched.

Apatow jumped the shark with Funny People. This is just further evidence of his suck factor.

Yep.

Its funny how most of criticism of the show is centered around the main character being "fat" and "ugly". People are quoting an earlier post as being soooo awesome...its not. Its pathetically shallow and uninformed. If the main character of the show was Jermima Kirke (Jessa on the show) and it was her being shown nude, these people wouldn't have a problem with the show. They certainly wouldn't have any anomosity towards it, which is an obvious tone in their posting. Them not being attracted to her = her being a fat disgusting whore. I'm sorry that she does not have a glamorous naked body like you have grown so used to seeing on television and jerk off to in the shower but that is not a legit knock on the show.
Oh and "fat disgusting whore" and "token black guy" have a scene together where they are arguing about him being a black republican and where he destroys her notions of what she thinks it means to black. I thought it was daring and intelligent dialogue. Like I said before, the show DOES NOT glorify these girls actions or thoughts on society, it tears them down. But the show has "sex driven, gay, liberal agenda" and you cant to FAP her tits so it sucks.

well she is. watching a fat and ugly girl bitch about her problems isn't entertaining

her character is also a completely horrible person that i want to fricking torture, which also makes it hard to watch

she's not that pretty and i hate her character almost as much as i hate hannah

at least pick marnie, or at worst shoshanna

well she is a fat, disgusting looking chick

at the LEAST, it defends them in their horribleness

i wouldn't go this far

he's one of the few reasonable characters on the show and he lasted like 1.5 episodes...and he was only included because the show was so horribly racist in season 1 that they had to add in random color

of course it couldn't be a black guy who was similar to them...he had to have some weird story that made him an outsider

To be fair I've got nothing specific for the whore part.

the coke scenes were aight, but i'm a sucker for cliche'd drug humor...and oh yeah, this show is funny when it's not trying to be this picture of a unique vision of a cliche'd idea

i just watched the episode from the super bowl night an frick every fricking character on this show except shosh

watching jess cry made me so happy

The show would be tolerable if Lena Dunham was even remotely attractive

Haven't read any of this thread past the OP but this show is damn good. Well-written, acted and the humor is witty, awkward and downright entertaining.

Unless you're over 40. If so GFY.

Such a tasteful, thoughtful and intelligent analysis. Dolt.

I have only watched the show on a few occasions. It's not really my cup of tea, BUT . . .

Contrary to SFP's assertion, it is NOT like every story about twenty-somethings trying to make it in NYC. These characters are more troubled and, yes, unattractive in one way or another than the attractive, likeable characters we find in most of those stories. And some of the writing in teh episodes I've seen is pretty good.

And Fenwick86's post is spot on with its comments on the dislike expressed by a lot of posters. They don't like what they consider to be an ugly, overweight girl with tattoos. And worst of all, these characters are "liberals".

And, yes, "Girls" is geared to a specific audience, but HBO doesn't program to lose money and it does have an audience. And could a couple of you guys drop the nonsensical crap about the network trying to push its agenda, values, politics, cultural views or sense of "hipness" on an audience? You sound absurd when you do that. There are all sorts of programs on HBO, Showtime, etc, with varying points of view and types of characters. Watch what you like. Don't watch what you don't like. What a great country.

SITC involved some older women, but only one was pretty (the brunette). the main character was ugly and the only character in that show that wasn't a huge count was the brunette

girls is just SITC with a bigger emphasis on the main character being ugly (which is ok because the suspension of disbelief is a lot lower). they even have the shitty internal monologue, but instead of writing articles in her head, hannah tweets

quote:

They don't like what they consider to be an ugly, overweight girl with tattoos.

there's a legitimate reason for that, especially since she makes sure that we have to deal with how ugly she is all. the. time. it only would take one time to learn she's ugly and has a horrible body. we don't need 100

quote:

And, yes, "Girls" is geared to a specific audience, but HBO doesn't program to lose money.

HBO has shown it is willing to keep shows that aren't popular around just for it's reputation. Treme is the perfect example of this

quote:

And could a couple of you guys drops the nonsensical crap about the network trying to push its agenda, values, politics, cultural views or sense of "hipness" on an audience?

well it's obvious that they are doing this. i don't care about the show pushing agendas, but it detracts from the actual show and makes all the main characters become even worse people, if that's possible

i honestly don't see how anybody could watch this show and not hate basically every main character (except shosh)

even last week's ep with the drama b/w the shitty half brit hippie and roy from the it crowd, the fricking stupid (she's seriously not that smart) hippie bitch gets in all the good zings against a guy who is insanely intelligent. why? well even in a scene where we're supposed to be shown just how horrible of a count jessa is, the writers still give her the intellectual upper hand (in an indirect defense of their shitty lifes)

the last episode was basically one long cliche, also

I watched the pilot and didn't get it. Then, I saw it win the Golden Globe and thought maybe I didn't give it a fair chance.

I see here that I was right. If it continues the way it started, which everybody seems to agree on, like it or not, I'm done with it. Glad I didn't waste any more time with the show.

Once again, the Movie/TV Board comes through.

It is similar to SITC. However, it remains somewhat different from the traditional story of young women making a life in NYC.

quote:

For all of your criticism of it, you sure seem to watch this show a lot.

Be that as it may, is it your position that shows can only be entertaining or interesting if the characters are attractive? This show isn't aimed a you.

quote:

HBO has shown it is willing to keep shows that aren't popular around just for it's reputation. Treme is the perfect example of this

I repeat, they aren't in business to lose money. It has an audience. As does Treme, albeit smaller than say that "masterpiece", Game of Thrones .

quote:

well it's obvious that they are doing this. i don't care about the show pushing agendas, but it detracts from the actual show and makes all the main characters become even worse people, if that's possible

That sentence doesn't make sense, really. The show is about those people and those people represent a specific kind of person. How the frick is that "pushing an agenda"? People who don't agree or don't like it don't watch it. Why are you watching it again?
