Back in the day rich people showed off through home design by having stuff like:
A giant back yard with landscaping around a huge pool.
An ornate dining room that could seat 20 with crystal chandeliers.
A 6 car garage for the Rolls, BMW, etc.

But today I'm looking at a WSJ feature about closets. Friggin' clothes closets off the master bedroom. The biggest was 1,300 square feet. WTF? How much time do you spend in your closet? How often do you show guests your closet?

So, it got me thinking. If somebody gave me $300,000 with the stipulation that it could only be spent on designing ONE room in my house which room would I pick? I'd go with the kitchen. What say you?

Kitchen is best investment statistically, of course if I lived in Hawaii I'd have an outdoor paradise

Depends on your interests. Outdoor space (pool, kitchen, covered dining) is nice. Home Theater is great. Kitchen area is probably best ROI.

Home Theater is great

And also relatively inexpensive compared to a decked out kitchen

Kitchen is the obvious answer here

Garage/Aircraft hanger with polished floor, possibly marble, stainless steel cabinets in work areas, sitting area with home theater, kitchen/bar for snacks, attached highend bathroom and shower.

I've designed and built two Home Theaters for clients that were in excess of $240K.
