I have the same laptop, but one or two generations older -- the G73. I've had it for about 2 and a half years. Has half the RAM, and a mobile HD 5870. Still going strong and can play new games (with low settings). I like that it has two HD bays. Mine only had a single 7200RPM HDD, so I used the other bay to add an SSD. You ought to consider doing that. That fricker will scream.

I'm probably going to get a new laptop in the coming months, so let me know how that one performs. My G73 is good but not without its faults. I love ASUS, and there is absolutely no other laptop at that price with those specs, so they always win best bang for buck... but I kind of felt like a beta tester. There were issues with trackpad interference, poor wifi signal, and poor graphics card cooling. I fixed all of those issues myself, but I had to disassemble the entire thing. The card still runs a little hot, but that can be blamed on design.

Specifically, I'd like to know how hot the GPU gets. Download GPU-Z or HWMonitor, run it, and play a game for an hour or so, then report back the max temp.

I plan on switching out one of the HDD for a SSD soon.

I'll let you know what the temp is in a couple hours.

Just checked, I'm running Far Cry 3 on this laptop with the optimal (highest) video settings.

An hour in, both say 64 C/147 F, maxed at 65 C/149 F.

Fantastic. Before I did my fixes on my laptop's card, it frickin idled at 65. I managed to drop it to 55, but it still gets to 80 sometimes under load.

What should your system be at?

All depends on cooling. Honestly, 65C load for a mobile high-end card is very good. A desktop card with a reference cooler might reach 75-85 under load. The cards are designed to sit at 90 and above, and shut down if they get too hot, but obviously you don't want to run it like that all the time. My cards are watercooled and overclocked and don't go above 40-42.

Game ran from 3:50 PM to just now at 10:16 PM. Highest temp was 65.

Now at 10:18, it's back down to 44.

Yeah, I get the same numbers on mine as well. One of the most impressive things about this machine has been the cooling. I went with the ASUS b/c it has 2 cooling fans vs only 1 fan on the MSI machine

eta

and the goofy arse colored keyboard on the MSI didn't help either

the only thing the MSI had over the ASUS was the SSD, but I plan on putting one in anyways so I didn't care. It was still way cheaper

Rome 2 total war is coming out later this year. Should be really awesome graphically. Check that. All the old total war games were good. Depends what type of games you want. I do not think that I could play games like cod or battlefield 3 on a computer.
