Draft Prospect: Lane Johnson

talked about him some in the Alternate Plan thread. Thought there were some interesting points in this story.

Johnson played quarterback at Kilgore College, but switched to tight end, which is where he began his Oklahoma career. He changed again to defensive end, then to offensive tackle before his junior season.
Over that span, he transitioned himself from a tall, lanky quarterback to an imposing, powerful offensive tackle. But even as he gained weight, Johnson kept his speed, which he demonstrated throughout Senior Bowl week, especially on one memorable play during the game.

Kiper slotted him going 16th to the St. Louis Rams, and Todd McShay has at No. 11, going to the San Diego Chargers.
“They were pretty wowed by all the positions that I've played,” Johnson said of NFL scouts.
“I want to show them I have the fundamentals and technique down to play tackle well. I'm not a raw prospect by any means.”

The more I learn about this guy the better he looks. If not re-signing Bushman or another UFA then LT skyrockets as a need. Some scouting comments from assorted sources without linking them all-

01/24/13 - 2013 Senior Bowl, OLine, Three up...2. Lane Johnson, Oklahoma (6-6 ¼, 302 pounds). Like Fisher, Johnson is NFL-ready after a solid three days at work. Occasionally he was pushed into the backfield but otherwise he was dominant against his teammates on the South team.

Lane Johnson is a NFL-ready player with excellent size who should hear his name called very early in the 2013 NFL Draft. He shows a nice explosion out of his stance and accelerates well. Oklahoma was not afraid to pull him out in open spaces. Great extension with his arms and looks to keep guys at arm's length consistently. Must learn to keep his feet moving and can be caught flat-footed by quick changes of direction. Still has some room to add more strength. A raw player who has more to learn at the position since he has only been an offensive lineman for two seasons with the Sooners.

It’s clear he’s picked up the position quickly, which is a big plus. His biggest bugaboo at this point is his ability to anchor against an effective bullrush. Once he fills out his frame it shouldn’t be a problem. Johnson was nagged by an ankle injury for a short time during his senior season but otherwise has a clean injury history. His upside is as high as that of Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher; he’s just less pro-ready come day one. Johnson is going to be a first round pick and has value in top half of the first. He may have some hiccups early on, but Johnson is going to become a franchise left tackle.

Lane Johnson is one of the best offensive tackles available in the 2013 NFL Draft. He's awareness jumps out when watching him play. Athleticism and short area quickness won't be an issue for Johnson. He's going to come off the board at some point in the first round and have a steady career in the NFL.
Pro Comparison: Jordan Gross, Carolina Panthers
Both Johnson and Gross play the game with tremendous awareness and instinct. They also both lack a bit of the mean streak you like to see from an NFL offensive tackle. Johnson has the upside to become a Gross-type anchor on an NFL line.

His footwork and size, combined with his speed make him an ideal target to any teams needing either more pass or run protection. There has been some buzz with three teams being highly interested, and a report that a New York Giants scout said after watching Johnson, ” That’s my left tackle.”

The defense is a sieve that needs repair badly. This guy over Bushrod would free up over $6-8mil of cap that he will cost yearly though. That's money that could be spent towards defense. Then ya got yourself a shutdown blindside protector for Brees as he heads to the home stretch of his career at age 34. With the complaints many have about the defensive draft selections past, here you have one of the surest types of picks you can take.

I'm new here, but I have been secretly rooting for an offensive lineman with the first pick. There's more upside and value than with many of the projected first round defensive picks, IMO. If teams like New England can do it with a middle of the road defense, the way this league is going, it shows the value of good offensive linemen cannot be overstated. The Saints line has been on a small/gradual decline the last few seasons for whatever reason. We can get some defensive guys after shoring up the o-line...Just my opinion.

Me too. As bad as our holes on defense are, our hole at OT is going to be even bigger. I'm expecting Bushrod to be on another team next year, and Streif has proven to be average at best at RT. I've been on the Jordan/Mingo wagon so far, but I would not at all be upset with JOhnson

That is be a good option for us as well. A 1-2 year stop gap that can still play at a decent level and won't break the bank. I still wouldn't be too upset with Johnson, but Payton/Loomis has never gone OL that early.

The only possible way I'd be alright with this is if we can't re-sign Bushrod or find another Grubbs like replacement last year for Nicks.
We need defensive players in the worst way and the offense doesn't need an OT more than the defense needs just about everything.

I expect Loomis to clear cap space somehow, but I don't see us paying Bushrod what he will want (especially with that late Pro Bowl bid). If something like Blues suggested with McKennie becomes a possibility, then I would be down for that, but I can't see a Grubbs-like (young, top-10 OT) situation happening this year.

If our best two OTs on the roster are Streif and Brown, then OT becomes our biggest hole, IMO. I can live with Tez starting at OLB rather than a Mingo, Ansah, or Jordan, and drafting Johnson, rather than relying on Brown and Streif, and having Jordan/Mingo/Ansah when you already have Tez and Jr.

I realize a pass rusher isn't the only position we could potentially address defensively in the 1st, but I think most of us realize that at 15, that is probably the best value on who will be available.

Here's a question for you guys: If Mingo, Jordan, and Ansah are all gone at 15, and you want to get a defensive player there no matter what, who is your preference (among the players likely to be available 10-20)?

I'm thinking Jenkins, Hankins, Vaccaro, and Ogletree become options at that point. For me, it's Ogletree.

I like lane jonhson a lot. I would love to draft him if we don't resign bushrod .

Also, we would have to have a few defensive signings through fa.

re: Draft Prospect: Lane Johnson

If L. Johnson is available at 15, I don't personally see how he could be turned down. From all indications this is a weak LT class after the top three. Do the saints want to give major money to Bushrod and trim somewhere else for it?

As much as a bonafide pass rusher is needed, protecting the franchise is needed more. Let's face it, if we get the next Aldon Smith in the draft it won't matter if Brees is in an ICU because we relied on C. Brown to protect him.

But then again, maybe Loomis can pull another magic monkey out of his arse and we'll be able to keep Bushrod, get two or three high priced free agents and draft the next Lawrence Taylor, too.

Exactly. We are going to have to address defense and OT somehow in FA and the draft, even if that means re-signing Bushrod. I'm leaning towards drafting Johnson, and spending whatever cap space we are going to have on D.

We have a pretty shaky track record drafting D in the 1st. I'd rather draft a top OT, pay a proven defensive free agent, then overpay an average Bushrod and hope we can finally draft a defensive player in the 1st worth a damn.

That's what usually happens, I can't even remember when was the last time the FO drafted a white guy in the first two rounds!

re: Draft Prospect: Lane Johnson

always get me with trivia questions. Last 1st or 2nd Rd cracker wuz another tackle. Stinchcomb 2003.

Mingo, Jordan, Ansah gone...

Dunno how well Ansah is gonna project in a 3-4 anyway. Might be a lot easier 4-3 DE guy.

Lotulelei, Jarvis Jones, and Damontre Moore all go before them I'm supposing ya mean too. Any of those guys ya snap up without thinking.

In THAT case the list of D guys for me comes down to-

Dee Milliner- not my favorite position to take for need but if he's THE BPA that you think could be a legit shutdown corner you cannot pass.

Kenny Vaccaro- if we saw Harper cut (which isn't out of the question) then this could make a ton of sense. Even possible with both safeties back. Looks like a slight stretch at 15.

Hankins- some of these giant NT guys can be awfully risky at #15 IMO. He's already gets a rap on taking a lottta plays off. I'm not sold that we have a real NT on the roster so even though he wouldn;t be my favorite I'll call him the most likely if the top 6 D guys were gone.

How about an even better option for my liking...

Lotulelei, Jones, Moore, Jordan, Mingo, and Ansah all gone? TRADE DOWN. Get Vaccaro, John Jenkins, Montgomery, or Johnathan Banks ten picks later and pick up a 2nd Rder.
