OP, I would get a 3/4 ton truck. That is just too much weight to be towing regularly with a 1/2 ton. It is just gonna push you around all day and wear out your brakes unless you set the trailer brake up heavy. Tires are gonna wear badly, etc. Just too many problems to be messing with a 1/2 ton.

Don't think I agree w/ you re: the diesel fuel economy. My 6.7 F250 is almost identical to my 6.2 GM. 13-14 city, 17-18 hwy.

The programmer did up pressure and shifting is firmer than most would like it to keep it from slipping too much, but you have to have a good foundation to be able to handle that much power. An Allison would be burnt up 4x by now
Best transmission in any truck, anywhere.

Should I consider a gas 3/4 ton?

I wouldn't. May as well get a diesel, will last longer and get better fuel Economy.

Yes.
I'm not telling you that it's what you should get, but you should definitely consider it.
I know of two gas burner 3/4 ton chevys with 180k miles of them that had a whole life of pulling stock trailers and tractors around with no engine issues and no real major issues with anything. One still has the original brake pads. They pull great. Definitely not a diesel, but they don't burn $3.80 fuel, and they don't cost you $1000 for every single thing that goes wrong with them. Burn up ANYTHING on a diesel and you'll hate that SOB.
3/4 ton trucks are just way better built than half tons. I'm a huge fan of gas burner 3/4 tons.

A diesel is also a 8,000 dollar option. Lots of miles to ever see that mpg pay off if you don't have need it.
