With the weight and frequency he will be towing the 3/4 ton should be looked at as well. Maybe a diesel that's a year or 2 old

Some may say it's overkill, but if you're continuously pulling 3.5 tons, I'd go with a 3/4 ton pickup. BTW you may want to find out what the fuel economy of those vehicles will be when you pull that much. I've personally pulled 35,000 lbs of peanuts. I probably don't know anything about this type of thing.

Better take in to account the transmission. It'll give problems before rearend or suspension.

The engine is never the problem with a towing truck.

New tacomas have more power than old 1 tons did.

The transmission, brakes (<--- a really big deal), rear end, suspension, and even the frame if you get into high tongue weights will all suffer on a half ton truck. They're leagues better than they used to be for occasional towing, but if you want something to last for 150k miles with something hooked to it, you need a truck made for towing.

Personally, I wouldn't tow 7k twice a month wiith a 1/2 ton truck.

The engine has very little to do with it, it's the transmission and suspension that will be doing work.

I think GM's 6.2 gas engine is the best on the planet and will do the job better than the other two, but as I said, that's not the big issue.

The 6 liter from 02 is the best gas burner ever put in a truck any make or model.

That motor is a hoss.

Agree.

With any gas burner, the best MPG he's going to see is approx 1/2 of his unloaded MPG and even that is optimistic.

Diesel is the best answer here, but $$$.

With today's diesels, gas burning 3/4 tons are the best option for a large percentage of people in the large truck market IMO

Im not familar with Ford's 6.2, but the 2008 GM 6.2 I had made more HP, more torque and got about 25% better fuel economy in a heavier truck than than my 2006 Ford KR 5.4.

That 5.4 was a crappy motor, though.

Taking into account the extra cost for the diesel, I could agree.
Hard to beat that low-end diesel torque, though.

The big gassers get way better MPG than they used to, so that helps.

GMs 6.2 just isn't as proven as their 6.0 was, but I don't see why it won't be as reliable.

Unless I pulled every single day, I wouldn't buy a new diesel. Diesel costs a shitload, maintenance is high as giraffe pussy, and they get horrible fuel economy.

They just aren't worth it anymore IMO

That 6.2 block is a beast.

Don't think I agree w/ you re: the diesel fuel economy. My 6.7 F250 is almost identical to my 6.2 GM. 13-14 city, 17-18 hwy.
Haven't seen maintenance costs rise, oil changes are more, but you only do them every 10k.

Well proven, no doubt.

We'll see if Ford's 6.7 can match it. It needs to go a ways first.

I figured the odds had to be with Ford now. What's the chances of them screwing up another diesel?

I put 130,000 on my last one with no trouble. I've got 143,000 on this one and it runs strong as ever. I hope to put another 100,000 on it.

I just wish Allison had made the power door locks.

And the outside door handles. I can change one in ten minutes.
