Watched this on Netflix last night and I must say that I found it to be outstanding

From the opening credits on, I really felt like I was watching an early 80's horror movie and I was captivated.

The tension builds slowly during the movie and the pacing is deliberate. There aren't many, if any, cheap scares, which I found refreshing.

I want to watch Innkeepers next.

I bought HotD a few weeks ago, and when it came in I realized that I had already bought it like 6 months ago. Still need to watch it though.

Bought the Innkeepers too. I bought like 5 or 6 from that horror thread we had on here a few weeks back. Just need to find time to watch them now.

Bookmarking this thread, simply because I missed the thread from a few weeks ago, I need a few good horror movies. The last decent horror movie I've seen was "drag me to hell."

Side note: I just looked up Raimi to see what he's currently working on (duh!) and noticed something that really kinda sucks... on his official IMB under Known For:

Xena: Warrior Princess (1995), The Evil Dead (1981), Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995), aaaaaand: Spider-Man 3 (2007) BAAAALLS

Speaking of...anybody want the DVD of House of the Devil?

These were the movies I bought from that thread:

House of the Devil
Absentia
Playback
Black Death
Retreat
The Innkeepers

Went through it and watched Trailers for the movies listed in it, and those were the ones I thought I'd like. Really interested to see Black Death, but I may just have to grab some pizza and check out HotD tonight.

I watched it and I enjoyed it.

Not really scary though, just kinda dark

HotD, is a LEGIT scary movie.

The opening credits really set the tone. The 80's style music, the font, freeze frames. It's just greatness.

Yeah that's what I'm expecting. Some of those I listed aren't really "horror" films. Retreat is another one...more of a thriller.

I may try to watch a good bit of those this weekend.

This movie reminded me a little too much of Rosemary's Baby (only set in the 80s), yet it was still entertaining and suspenseful. I enjoyed it.

Love horror movies, but don't get the love it. And Innkeepers was a complete let down. I described it on a thread a while back as a ghost story with no story.

I tried looking for the list at least twice the last couple months when I was sitting at home wanting to watch a movie. Either I've forgotten to bookmark it or the thread was deleted because I haven't been able to find it

House of the Devil is one of favorites of all time. It would certainly be in the top 10. As you stated, it builds tension so well.

The Innkeepers is pretty great too. It isn't on the same level and really is a different type of movie.

Black Death

I loved this movie. It's dark, moody tone just really worked for me. The cinematography was outstanding. Plus, the Middle Ages surprisingly provide an excellent backdrop for some horrific things to go down and still seem realistic. People and society in general were pretty scary back then.

House of the Devil has an older horror movie feel to it. The way they don't switch camera shots and leaves them in that wide perspective gives the film an unnerving, eery quality. The music, also in that vintage 70's horror vibe, was well done too. I didn't particularly love the theme or the story but if you like the tone of the film, you will enjoy it.
