Inexpensive HD shotgun?
Posted by datFNpinto on 2/7/13 at 9:57 am00
I've read great reviews on the Mossberg Maverick 88, Savage/Stevens 350 (Ithaca 37 clone), and the Norinco 982 (870 clone). Does anyone on the board have any experience with any of these?
I was originally looking at the 870 and the Mossberg 500 but these cost a lot less and have just as good of reviews.

Remington 870. Can get a new one from Wally World for about 300, or a used for about 200.

CZ makes a pump 12 guage with an 18.5" barrel and mag capacity of 1+5 that retails for around $280.

I vote Rem 870. I suspect most here will also.

Try pawn shops for used 870s

Remington 870.
I have the 18" with the 4 round mag tube. The finish sucks but for $350 I expected it. Besides that, it runs flawlessly.

Got this from walmart for $450. Had a discount but it's usually $499. It's the mossberg semi auto 930. 4+1 shells. 18.5" barrel.
You can get the pump version for around $250-300.
This is it new without addons. With the tube extension you can add 2 more shots. It can only be 6+1 bc it's an 18.5" barrel. For a 12 guage if you need more than 5 shots you have bigger issues though.
If you get a pump they're substantially cheaper and there a nice "tactical" Tristar pump for like $190. You can find a lot of different pumps for $200-$300 range.

I like that setup!
The ones I listed are available at Academy for under $200.
It's one gun that I hope I never HAVE to use. It will get more use shooting golf balls, old computer monitors, bag phones, pumpkins and watermelons.

Just spend the extra money and get the 870.
Is HD really something you wanna go cheap on?

I was shooting holes in the iced over river with some slugs.
I still need to get my pistol grip butt stock but I have all my sights and everything at home I can put on it.

Mossbergs are junk, unless you're looking to buy a club instead of a shotgun.

These weapons are the gold standard for a reason. Large numbers of accessories (especially the 500), exceptionally large user base - each weapon probably has ~ 1 to 2 million owners, at least in some configurtion (lots of 870 express owners out there). I assure you, it is not a fad, not a fashion statement, not brand snobbery (especially in Mossberg's case). The Remington is generally a smoother action, little more solid, a little heavier and a little more expensive. The Mossberg is generally a little easier to accessorize, a little lighter and a little less expensive.
Pick the one you like the best. If you MUST deviate, I would suggest the Savage/Stevens because that Ithaca shotgun upon which it is patterned was a popular police shotgun prior to the dominance of Remington/Mossberg in police pumps, and Benelli in police semi-autos. I have little experience with the Maverick 88 and no familiarity with the Norinco 982 - I'm not saying I'm close-minded, but a HD shotgun, by definition, means I'm trusting it to defend my life, and more importantly, the lives of my family, and I just don't see where saving a few bucks here and there is worth that kind of anxiety.

I actually have a mossberg shotgun, its not tacticool like you, but it has had about 2000 shells through it with no problems.
