I wouldn't back down unless you absolutely had to. Yell in a loud, clear voice. Show you are human. Basically, assert your authority!
I am in the woods (where there are a lot of hogs) all the time and outside of hunting season, I never carry a gun. They are just as frightened of people as any other prey animal.

Wind was from the west and I was downwind of the pigs. I soon as I saw him and he saw me, he started to stomp his feet, ran about 15 feet towards me, then back to feet stomping then a staring contest while he was grunting.

But I would pick the G20 over a 357. Biggest drawback is expensive to shoot. It should be lighter to carry than a 357 revolver.

Yeah, he didn't know what you were.
If you had run at him, I bet he would have taken off the other way.

Ruger GP100 with 4 in barrel.

10 mm, 40, or 45 Glock would you prefer? I would like to take it at a gun range and practice several times. I heard the 10 mm is more expensive than the rest. Thanks for everybody's help and opinions. My boss just let me hold his G23. Fits pretty well in my hand.

G20(10mm). You can get a 40 cal barrel and spring and shoot both.
re: Advice on purchase of a new handgunPosted by Hammertime on 2/6/13 at 2:46 pm to dneverever
You can get a lone wolf barrel to convert your 10mm to 40cal. IMHO it is like shooting a 22 when you do. 1/2 the recoil of a 9mm when you put it in the full size frame. I use the same spring for both with no problems

Do you need a spring also?

A Glock 20 is definitely the lightest one you could take out there for sure. And as others have said, you get 15 rounds of 10mm, which is a lot. You could go with a 45 or 40 and I'm sure it could kill a pig too, but not nearly as easily as 10mm. A 40 S&W round is just a 10mm cut to about 2/3 length. The 10mm has a lot more arse behind it.
As much as I dislike Glocks, I think it would be your perfect candidate here. It doesn't matter if you got it dirty from working, it has a polymer frame so it weighs less, and you get 15+1 chances to drop that sorry arse pig.
But if you instead decide for revolvers, as others have said, a Ruger GP100 or S&W 686P (7 shot) would do the trick.

Is the g20 easy to carry in a holster? Also where you recommended to buy? Thanks for your help again

Performance center 627 was going to be my recommendation as well.
Get the 8-shot model and never look back. It is a wonderful revolver.

Like I said, I carried it 3-8mi a day on average when I was in the woods. Sometimes I went 10-15 miles, and never felt like I wanted to take it off.
The one I use is a Blackhawk 2100270 with a 2100057-S actual holster part. It is adjustable to a bunch of positions also. It is extremely easy to draw. Tried one of those ones that you wear like a backpack and the gun goes under your armpit, but that was more of a PITA than anything. Good old clipped to the waistband of my pants was the way to go.

Not if you hit the quarter sized kill zone

.357 Revolver!
Of all of the calibers that you listed it is the caliber that has the highest amount of energy.
Use FMJ rounds. A pig, or bear for that matter, has a very hard skull. If you were to hit it in the head, hollow point rounds have been known not to penetrate. Because you probably do not have to worry about shoot through (shooting through your target and hitting something behind it) in this situation, you will be fine with FMJ.
Use a revolver because you obviously don't have much experience with a handgun. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but a revolver is more reliable than a semi-auto. (I know that some of you haters out there are gonna pounce on this statement, but unless he is going to go to the range and do clearing drills...my statement holds true).
