Not sure if I get the meaning of trendy here. Johnny's has been a great spot for years. Also some of other places. I mean if he wants a place that only locals know about than ask for a local hangout, but I wouldn't call Johnny's or Galatoire's trendy.

It's a strange request, and Friday is one of the tricker days to try to eat lunch in the quarter, trendily or otherwise, as the Krewe of Hermes and lot of the Bacchus Float parties pretty much take over most of the places that would fall under this guy's definition of "trendy." And Galatoires is swamped beyond belief with other people (and is, I believe, the only day of the year you can reserve downstairs, via auction).

Other than "not trendy," it's not clear what other criteria he's looking for, and he's rightly getting suggestions all over the map - from poboy places to sit down establishments.

Need a clearer request here, to answer.

If you want hipster "not trendy," keep heading downriver to the bywater. I like Maurepas, but I would classify it as trendy.

The whole idea that it has to be somewhere "not trendy" is lost on me. Good food is good food and good value for that food is a high priority. There are plenty of places that offer this but may just happened to be much reviewed or frequented by people the OP and/or hipsters perceive as "squares." Who cares that much about being in the in-crowd?

That's the thing. He doesn't want to be in the in-crowd. He's trying to find the opposite of the in-crowd. No matter what, it is still trying too hard.

The buffet at Harrahs. They got some sisters in there cooking up some good soul food.

48 hours notice on the Friday before Mardi Gras? I'd advise you stick to lucky dogs.

I don't think so Wink. He wants to be in with the crowd that loathes the crowd that thinks they're the in-crowd. But he and his crowd's spurning of the supposed in crowd by proxy makes his crowd THE in-crowd.

Yes he does; just a different definition of the in-crowd is all. Essentially he's trying to conform to the non-conformist point of view. It's groupthink at its finest.

The fact that someone's SOLE CRITERIA for which they are seeking a dining establishment is that it be "not trendy" just screams lame to me.

But, what do I know?

It's a few days before the Friday before Mardi Gras which is very late to be looking for a lunch venue in the FQ without a reservation and with specifications (that I don't understand). Your best bet would be away from the FQ, honestly, but I can't think of a suggestios that won't result in waiting a good while IF reservations haven't already filled up places who take them. For those that don't, get in line early. Very early.

You might be able to get a good roast beef poboy early at Commerce on the corner of Gravier and Camp if you go early. It's a short walk from the FQ across Canal and a block.

I've been traveling today and I see that some of you had some places I've never tried nor heard of and I thank you. To all that questioned my comment of not trendy with snide comments GFY. Not trendy may have been the wrong wording. As a person not from or living in NO I was looking for something good from a place I had not been to nor heard of, non tourist. The opposite of Acme or Mothers (which I will never wait in line for again). We're doing Luke (which I don't like but the wife does) Friday night and Brennan's brunch Sunday. I was just hoping to find a new place that the locals enjoy. So add or flame away.
Thanks.

Best Milk Punch I have found in NO and I have tried several other places. Helps me recover from the ills of Saturday.
