Regardless of whether you believe in the legitimacy of IP or not

Do you think technology will make it more and more irrelevant? What impact do you think that will have on society.

Yes. It's already happening and will only progress quicker and quicker.

I subscribe to the information wants to be free line of thinking. As the costs to reproduce and distribute information continue to get lower and lower, expect a much greater free flow of it.

Greater knowledge base
Greater artistic output
Faster progress
More transparent governments
Greater liberty

Higher technology can just as easily result in smaller liberty...

RFID
Universal wireless networks
Fiber-optic imaging

etc, etc...

counter-point on the effects it may have: things that are expensive to invent but nearly costless to reproduce may never come into existence to begin with, as there is little incentive to make the huge investment.

A little off topic, but do you think that the internet will ever get to the point, that is so physically diversified, that we will never have to worry about corporate control of bandwidth or a government "internet kill switch"? (I don't even know if I'm asking the question properly. )

Yes. Actually, various solutions are being worked on by various groups as we speak.

As I understand them, the solutions tend to focus on mesh networks that allow normal, ubiquitous devices to essentially act as relays for network traffic.

Probably a slight strengthening of the law. People realize it won't protect them enough though and take more and more steps to safeguard their secrets that give them some kind of competitive advantage.

It's a valid concern, but I honestly don't believe it will be that big of a deal.

If anything, the internet has demonstrated that people love to create and share. From wikipedia, to open source software, to fan fiction, etc. The desire to provide value to others is stronger than the desire for personal profit as long as basic needs are met, believe it or not.

Check out this video on drive and motivation

Not only that, but the free flow of information will allow global collaboration that wasn't possible before. And that will significantly bring costs down.

Hmmm...I can't quite visualize that but I'll take your word for it.

Should all forms of property be abolished?

Irrelevant?
Nope.

At least let's hope not.
Lest you and I have to take the time to develop our own intellectual property rather than having the opportunity to partake of others' efforts.

I love partaking of the effort of others. I use as much free open sourced software as I possibly can, and I download as many torrents of movies and tv shows as I possibly can.

Sooo if I work for years and years and figure out what the magic bullet cure for cancer is, I don't own it?

How are you arguing that IP isn't legit personal property? A cornerstone of libertarianism is that we own our labor, thus the fruits of our labor as well.

If their intellectual property was irrelevant, it would be a different and far more restrictive world.

I enjoy fast cars. I drive fast cars fast. That does not make speed limits irrelevant.

Well I don't agree in the existence of intellectual property. So I guess I should say, I believe the artificial construct of intellectual property will soon become irrelevant (As is already happening).

You sound like a career student.

In the real world people develop new ideas and research that can have a lot of value. They do this with their own labor. Are you saying people dont own their labor and the information they may create?

If IP doesn't exist, why would anyone want to develop a cure for cancer or new biofuels technology or (insert something we want but don't have here)???
