Underrated Metal Bands

Inspired by the most underrated band of all time thread.
Most underrated "of all time" is obviously a matter of opinion so I'm just talking in general about metal bands who probably didn't get their just due.
I'll throw out one damn good one and then two of my favorites.
Alabama Thunderpussy -- R.R.C.C.
I saw Corrosion of Conformity at Jacksonville Beach in '05 with Crowbar opening. Well, before Crowbar played these guys got up onstage and absolutely crushed it. I became a fan immediately. Just good, dirty, grungy, southern metal. They fit the definition of underrated perfectly because I saw them again a couple of years later headlining and there were literally about 25 people there. Pretty depressing. They've since broken up without ever getting even close to the recognition they deserved, IMO.
Accept -- Fast as a Shark
One of my alltime favorites. They came out of Germany and were absolutely shredding some GREAT heavy metal in the late 70's and early 80's. I was lucky enough to see them twice on the Balls to the Wall tour, opening for BOC at the Saenger in New Orleans in March of '84 and then again in June '84 opening for Ozzy in Biloxi. Their show as a headliner though at the Saenger in August of '85 still rates as one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible live. They've made a decent comeback in the last couple of years with a new singer named Mark Tornillo who sounds quite a bit like Udo but with better range. They'll never quite get as much credit as they probably deserve though.
Exodus -- War is My Shepherd
Damn shame that they don't come even close to the credit that "The Big Four" receive. They started the thrash genre right along with the others, coming out of San Francisco same time as Metallica. I'm sure most metal fans know this but Kirk Hammett was a member of Exodus up until being approached by Metallica. Just like Slayer, they've continued to put out really heavy stuff and IMO their musical peak didn't even come until post 2000 with Tempo of the Damned, followed by some more great releases.
Exodus -- The Atrocity Exhibition
This one is long but the three minutes from the 3:30 mark to the 6:30 mark are about as good as metal can possibly get.
They'll always be overshadowed by the other four though.
Anyway. Feel free to pitch in any metal fans.

Agree with Exodus. Crowbar and Eyehategod basically invented sludge metal and put New Orleans on the map as one of the best metal scenes in the country. Crowbar has been pretty influential to the New England hardcore bands of the 90s as well.
Death is fairly well known but is quite possibly the most talented group of musicians ever in metal. Chuck Schuldner was a true musical genius.

Yeah. Haven't seen Eyehategod but was lucky enough to see that COC/Crowbar show and then see Crowbar again here in Jax headlining a small club in November '10. Kirk was actually manning the merch table so I went and talked to him about being a fellow Louisiana native. He was cool as shite. We talked for awhile and determined that we were at a lot of the same shows in the 80's, including those two Accept shows at the Saenger. Super cool dude to talk to. Oh and the show was fricking kick-arse of course.

I'll have to check out some of that Death. You're right. I've known of them for years but haven't heard much. I know a lot of death metal musicians are talented as hell and have great technical proficiency. Personally I prefer it when it slows down a little and churns with great riffs.
I did get to see Cannibal Corpse here last April and they were fantastic. When it comes to death metal "Evisceration Plague" is right up my ally.

Cynic are kind of a quirky metal group in that their sound has a lot of fusion parts to as well.
And Paul Masvidal, their singer/lead guitar player, is a killer guitarist....one of my favorite players and one that I try to get some lead lick ideas from too.

The big three of technical death metal are Death, Atheist, and Cynic in that order. Death got more technical and prog over time. Their last album, The Sound of Perseverance, is my favorite.
I've seen Crowbar 11 times and have talked to Kirk a few times, he's a very down to Earth guy.

Textures
To Erase A Lifetime
Sletches From A Motionaless Statue
Laments Of An Icarus
Consonant Hemispheres
Pretty versatile group, but have been through three lead singers in the past decade.

Agree with exodus.
Exhorder is another underrated band.
There are lots of underrated thrash bands from the eighties. Overkill is overlooked.
