Russian Population Demographics

This has been discussed before. Russian population declined for 15 years and my speculated they would not be able to maintain their borders. Someone, probably China, would usurp a chunk of their nation.

Well, things have changed. Russia has recently been adding people. We'll see if that continues.

Also, I was surprised to see Russia's population is less than half of ours.

re: Russian Population Demographics

I would have thought it's more like 1/4 of ours. Russia doesn't = the USSR.

Russia has serious demographic problems, lots of their "increase" is related to high birth rates in the Moslem oblasts or autonomous Republics, about 40 to 50% of their conscripts are Moslems.

High death rates, high out migration by hot women and clever guys, lots of birth defects, orphans, alcoholism and drug abuse.

re: Russian Population Demographics

A few days ago I read about a family of "old church" believers that were living off the grid for forty years. The "schism" of old and new is a latter day concept of the 19th century if you know the authors and religious history of that era. The discovery of them was in 1979 so they had no clue at all of WWII as they moved into the taiga of Siberia in 1939 under the Stalinesque rules, it is in the Smithsonian magazine.

If you take out immigration, America too has a negative population growth.

the schism between the old believers and the russian orthodox church goes back way further than that, to reforms introduced in the 17th century.

also read that smithsonian article, fascinating stuff.

re: Russian Population Demographics

Does your post have anything to do with this thread? Are you suggesting there are a large number of Old Believers off the grid in Russia that never got the news about WWII and this has some demographic impact?

re: Russian Population Demographics

Putin's doing a lot to combat the demographic issues that Russia's having. Chiefly, he's banned abortion in certain cases (it will be completely banned within 10 years. FACT.), banned homosexual pride parades, banned American adoptions, worked with Patriarch Kirill to create a plan to use the ROC to push for higher birth rates (this includes sermons, blessings, etc.), and he's using the popular culture as well.
